"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." I am currently a Special Education teacher for grades K-2. My students and I are very passionate about learning and READING. If I am not teaching whole group, I am back at my table with my students crowded around teaching guided reading.
My students are a huge part of our school.
They are happy go lucky kiddos that just need that extra love and push to reach their full potential. We are a Title I, low income district, that tries to beat the odds every year. We have the most passionate and caring students and staff that are always eager to learn new things and help as many people as possible along the way.
My Project
Currently I am teaching my guided reading groups, of 5 or less students, at a kidney table. My paraprofessional is still working at a small square table (we work with what we have). It gets the job done but my students papers overlap each other, one side of their story book is always covered and it leads to quite a few meltdowns due to their frustration.
Over 3 hours of our day is currently spent at the square table. My students would have optimal space to complete writing, reading and even math tasks at a new kidney table during their rotation to the paraprofessional's station. We will be able to bring some of the only behaviors that occur in our class to a halt with this kidney table, and all of the space it will bring during our rigorous work times.
Reading is what our whole day revolves around, If I receive a kidney table, my students will be able to work in their own space at both my station and my paraprofessional's station.
Students would have more access to help with handwriting, prompts, word work and guided reading as a whole. My students are eager to become readers, and this will give them the extra push they need, and the elbow room to get the work done!
