My classroom is an invigorating and challenging space where students know there is always an exciting and engaging art lesson awaiting! By the end of this year, I want my students to have improved immensely in their creative thinking, reading and writing skills!
My students are diverse and eclectic!
Many of my students face economic hardship. Our school is the place where they feel welcome, comfortable and safe. This is also a place where we take pride in exposing our students to diverse experiences, especially art experiences. It takes a lot of compassion to be an educator at my school, and I have high expectations in my students' creative and academic abilities, and they should too! Our school is positive and upbeat, and we strive to promote buildingwide leadership! I want to empower my students through a series of lessons that bridge the humanities and art, specifically reading and writing. I want my students to create their own stories that are worthy of publishing.
My Project
Imagine a story so good it hurts! Then imagine that these extraordinary plots and detailed illustrations were created by third, fourth and fifth graders. This is just the kind of exceptional opportunity I want to create for my students! By supplying students with their own sketchbooks and drawing materials, we can plan imaginative stories that bridge literacy and art skills with subject matter that covers a scope of learning standards. We can plan our stories through a series of sketches, editing our words and grammar along the way. By using quality drawing pencils and colored pencils, I can teach my students the value of everlasting planning. Students would then have a show displaying their final stories on art boards. Students will never forget the power of a project like this and will take great pride and ownership of their creations.
When a classroom is fully equipped with materials, there is a higher probability that students will explore and gain a variety of ideas and interests!
Having this unique experience will teach students to ask questions, ponder ideas, problem solve, be responsible and be proud of what belongs to them. It is not fair to turn down lessons and ideas because we don't have enough resources, and we often face this situation in the art room. If we have these materials, students will feel prepared and ready!
