"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." Martin Luther King
The students in my school have taken the first step to help reduce unnecessary food waste and end hunger in our school. In just over a month, their thoughtful giving has outgrown the space in my mini fridge.
Help them take the next step.
Our middle school is a National School of Character that serves 600+ 6th, 7th & 8th grade students from diverse backgrounds. Our building is home to over 15 languages and approximately 60% of our students qualify for free & reduced meals.
Speaking of meals, students are forced to take specific food items to make a complete meal. Much of this perfectly good, unopened food was being thrown away. About a month ago, in conjunction with the school cafeteria, the Giving Basket was started. The Giving Basket allows students to donate uneaten, unopened portions of their breakfast or lunch to others that may be hungry through out the day. The food & drink (cartons of milk, apple & orange juice, yogurt, fruit cups, fresh fruit, and quick breakfast items) donations are stored and stocked in my personal mini fridge in my classroom. Throughout the day, students are allowed to get a healthy snack from the mini fridge when needed.
My Project
I am requesting 1 refrigerator for food storage, 20 insulated bags to transport food and 1 pack of plastic spoons.
The mini fridge we are currently using for the Giving Basket is too small to store all of the daily donations. A larger fridge, in a more central location, will allow more students access to the Giving Basket donations. Having insulated totes available will allow students to take food home for after school or over the weekend.
Our cafeteria will be able to provide left over entrees as well as the sides & drinks donated through the Giving Basket. Students will have access to insulated totes if they wish to take food home after school or over the weekend.
Donating to this project will allow the "Giving Basket" room to grow.
Basic needs will be met on a more regular basis and students will no longer need to say "Hey teacher, I'm hungry!"
