My class starts with activity and ends with more activity. Our physical education class goal is to teach as many physical activities to our students as possible so that as they get older they will be healthy enough to share their learned knowledge and help improve our society.
My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys who love to be active and play sports that they would not get to play at home.
This year we borrowed old, used gloves to play slow pitch softball and my boys loved it. Since the tornado in 2011 we have a nice field to play on but no equipment, because the field was made for the high school team. The high school team has now moved to a new location, but the field remains. It is our goal to keep this field from going to waste by letting our classes get on it to play slow pitch softball. The boys loved getting to play softball this year since we had the opportunity, but expressed the want to be able to practice the skills to become better at the game.
My Project
Picture a softball field with a class playing but instead of a softball they had to use a Rag Ball (ball made like a softball but out of all cloth) since they had no gloves. Students enjoy this to a small degree but the Rag Ball struggles to get out of the infield on the best hit and some still think it stings to catch. This year we managed to get enough kids to bring gloves in to let us play softball, but this still left us with issues. Kids had to leave their glove with me and hope no one stole it or damaged it. The bigger issue was with only enough gloves for half the class we could not work on throwing, catching, and fielding of ground and fly balls. By getting 30 gloves my classes will be able to work on all the skills of the game before trying to play the game itself. By working on the skills it is our hope that the students will find a love for this activity and it will help them maintain a healthy active lifestyle as they move into their adult years.
This donation will allow us to not only play, but truly teach the skills needed to be successful at slow pitch softball and many other activities that require throwing.
Slow pitch softball is one of a small group of activities that almost all cities sponsors for their community. It is our goal to give the students a good skill set so they will use softball to maintain a healthy active lifestyle for many years to come!
