As a math student did you ever ask "When will I ever use this"? Sixth grade math students ask this very question and we are on a mission to discover the answer.
Students will make connections between math concepts they are learning and the world around them.
As students read articles that describe real world situations they will see practical application for learned math concepts. Students can then use these concepts and ideas to construct, draw, or implement technology in the creation of solutions to real world problems they see around them.
My Project
Scholastic MATH magazine makes math meaningful and accessible to students by applying core math concepts to high-interest, real-world topics. Students are able to see math in action. This in turn can peak a student's interest to investigate more of the world around them. We want to use MATH magazine to ignite curiosity and a desire to solve problems that surround us everyday.
Our goal for this sixth grade class is to answer our question of "When will I ever use this".
Students in our high poverty district rarely see more than their own backyards. As math comes alive in these pages of MATH magazine, students can see how concepts directly apply to their life. While students are reading, discovering, and investigating ideas and problems set forth in MATH magazine articles, students will attach meaning to the classroom math skills, revealing the answer to our question.
