My students need 30 subscriptions to Junior Scholastic and Scholastic Scope for engaging, fun, and relevant informational texts to improve their literacy.
My goal is to help my ELL learners increase their English proficiency and be exited out of the ELL program when entering high school. However, my students are reluctant readers, but that could be fixed with the right materials.
I teach Advanced Level ELL students.
These are students who speak another language at home and are very close to reaching English proficiency when it comes to state standards. Many of my students have plateaued in their reading for various reasons.
They live in a poverty stricken neighborhood and most of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Their school is very diverse in terms of cultures, which in turn opens the eyes of the students and they welcome each others differences.
My Project
Common Core is heavy on informational texts. Students are required to read and comprehend informational texts while performing higher order thinking skills. The problem is our access to informational texts are not great. The texts are often too difficult for ELL learners to comprehend, or the topics are not relevant to them as a learner. Scholastic magazines offer a great array of texts. These texts are often leveled and meet the needs of ELL learners. They focus on vocabulary which is a huge aspect to ELL learning as well as offer visuals so students can make connections. From these magazines, my students will find themselves engaged with the material thus making it easier to move them to higher level thinking such as making inferences. They will be able to use these texts as sources to create claims over relevant, up-to-date, topics.
Donations to this project will give my students access to up-to-date, relevant informational texts monthly.
Having texts that are appealing to them as readers will allow them to effectively learn how to comprehend the text better thus growing them into lifelong readers.
