My students need books at various levels in order to meet their reading needs. They also need books in a series to study characters and how they grow and change.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Reading is "the thing" in my classroom. When my students are given reading time they find a place to get comfortable and begin reading. As of December 1st my students have read and tested on 438 books which is an exposure to over 9,194,003 words!
Our school is set in a neighborhood with very hard working parents, many who work several jobs to support their families.
They have passed this hard work ethic on to their children. We are a Title 1 school and the majority of our students are free and reduced lunch. Our school is a safe zone for many students and their families and the staff here truly care about serving our students.
My Project
Putting lower level books in my classroom will help those struggling readers by giving them more choices of text at their current reading level. Students need to read at their level in order to master basic skills that will allow them to increase their reading levels by applying what they know to the text. I will use these resources to introduce authors and series of books to students that are great examples of text.
My students are eager learners.
When I present them with new information they absorb it like a sponge. Many of my students struggle with reading and I do not have books in my classroom to support the level they need to read. However, they want to increase their skills and are not giving up. We just need to get the right materials in their hands to help them grow into on level, successful readers.
