The goal for my classroom this year is to have 100 books per child, on their level. I have been working at this goal for two years and I am almost to the end!
My students are from a small town located outside of St.
Louis, Missouri. It is an unstable community, plagued with poverty, violence, and health issues. I educate a transient population and typically have a quarter of my class change throughout the year. Even with all the challenges my students face, they are kind and giving. My students have hearts of gold, with strong will and determination. They enjoy learning and make our classroom an exciting place.
I would describe my school as a "base" for my students. They know they are safe here and will be taken care of. I'm proud to work with people that not only care about educating children, but also care about health, safety, and families. Our staff provides food, clothing, and other assistance to students in need.
My Project
These resources will be used daily for over sixty children. They will primarily use these books during Reader's Workshop. Students will shop for books on their level and use them to practice reading "Superpowers". I will also use these texts to instruct small groups and one on one conferencing.
This project will improve my classroom first and foremost because it will help me reach my goal of having 100 books per student on their level.
It will also provide my students with a variety of differentiated readers to practice strategies with. My students' lives will be enhanced because they will have exposure to the resources they need to become proficient readers.
