This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever tried to sit in a hard plastic chair for hours on end? How well did you get your work done? It's nearly impossible! My students are moving around a lot, but they still need to sit and get work done. How much easier that will be once we have some comfortable and alternative seating!
School is often a haven for my students.
The majority of my students come from low income families. We have over a 90% free and reduced lunch rate. Despite their disadvantages, both students and teachers work hard to ensure their success today and in the future.
My Project
My students need comfortable seating! Chair cushions, alternate seating for those who need to move, and bean bags for comfortable floor seating. This furniture will create a more inviting environment for my students. A comfortable place to learn and grow. It is so hard to learn when you are focused on the fact that you are uncomfortable. It is important to take care of the basic needs first and then higher learning can take place.
I realize that often people don't think about furniture when they think of helping students succeed.
However, if you simply step back and think about how you feel in different environments. Are you more relaxed and ready to cooperate, compromise, and engage when the place you are in is comfortable? Yes! No one works best surrounded by hard plastic and stiff environments.
Take some time to help a classroom become inviting and give students a chance to dig deeper in their learning.
