Eighteen eager students enter my room each morning ready to absorb all of the kindergarten knowledge that will challenge them to grow into the first graders they will eventually become.
Some students enter kindergarten year knowing how to read simple sentences, count to 100, and even tie their shoes; however, some enter kindergarten with no prior knowledge on how to properly turn pages of a book, hold a crayon, or count to 5.
We are a Title I school and several of our students do not have much, if any, experience with technology before coming to school. Even with the limited technology in our classroom (one iPad mini and one computer), the students have already grown from using this technology. I would be amazed to see what they could accomplish if they were able to increase the use of technology in the classroom.
My Project
Each day, the students participate in reading and math centers that correlate with the skills and concepts that we are learning. While students are working with partners on these stations, I am leading small groups targeted at concepts that we struggle with. For some students school is the only place where educational games on the iPad or computer can be played. We have one iPad and one computer in our classroom that are both being used for educational games during center time. With two more iPads, there could be eight students during math centers and eight students during reading centers that could utilize the iPads.
Already this year, I have seen a huge learning growth in my students.
Not only is this learning growth from my instruction, but it is also due to the educational games that they have played. I have caught my students singing "The Number Rock" to help with learning their "teen" numbers or the "Short /a/ Song" to help with sounding out their phonetic words in books. With your help, we can grow into the smartest bunch of kindergarteners around!
