L-I-K-E says "like." L-I-K-E says "like." G-O says "go." G-O says "go." Repetition, Repetition, Repetition. Young learners, especially kindergarten students, need repetition in order to learn to read.
My students attend a high-poverty school in rural Missouri.
My students are kind, hardworking, and intelligent; however, they struggle with reading. I am proud to say that with a lot of hard work and the right materials, these students can make a huge leap toward becoming great readers.
My Project
My students need 5 sets of books written by Margaret Hillert. When my kindergarten students are ready to begin reading, they need to start with books that repeat common sight-words. I have found that books written by Margaret Hillert do exactly that. Only common sight words are used and they are repeated frequently throughout the book. By the time the student finishes the book, they are very familiar with the sight words. With just a little practice, the student can easily recognize the words by sight and begin to read fluently.
My goal as a reading teacher is very simple.
I want to create fluent readers who can comprehend what they read. With your help, I can put books in the hands of my students so that they can begin to become the great readers that we all want them to be.
