My students need World Cultures and Geography textbooks to help reduce the gap between HS and MS.

My students start their day in my class reading about current events. We do this because our students lexile levels are not at grade level. I attempt to push them to read so that hopefully by the end of the year they will be reading at the 10th grade.
My students are very bright, resilient students.
Many have endured so much already in life. I teach at an urban school where all students receive free lunch. These kids work hard to try and succeed so that they may dream of a better future. I am attempting to help with this dream by teaching history in a way that opens them to respecting others views with respect to the past.
Our students do not have the necessary skills to read maps. I know with technology this may seem odd to worry about, but when my students don't know how many countries are on North America we need to go back to the basics. We also need to teach them tolerance of others. With an interactive textbook they would be able to use their iPads each day as well as have history at their fingertips.
My project will give students a perspective they don't have.
I believe textbooks aid in teaching but are not the primary resource. Myself as the teacher, is their primary resource, so I need tools at my fingertips to help teach them about today's world and the past. Many of my students have never left the state of Missouri, and an interactive tool will aid them in dreaming of traveling one day.
