At the end of the year, I would like for my students to be prepared to continue with their education, whether in high school or college. The biggest challenge that I face is getting my students engaged in the information and showing them how what we are learning about will apply to their lives.
My school is a small, rural school of 169 students K-12.
It is situated at the entrance of our town with a population of about 336 and one or two businesses. The school environment is one where everyone knows everyone else, a very close knit community. The classes are small in size and students are able to receive help from their teachers when they need it. My students are bright, inquisitive young adults, who are eager to show their teachers what they know and what they have learned.
Currently, my students access some of their assignments and instruction on-line. Students access their work using a cell phone or a computer at home. My students learn better through the use of differentiated instruction and information presented to them in a variety of ways, appealing to their different learning styles.
My Project
My students need a Promethean Activboard. With the Promethean ActivBoard, I can accommodate different learning styles. Tactile or kinetic learners can use the screen and learn by touching and marking at the board to help them manipulate the information presented in the lessons. Audio and visual learners can observe the teaching on the board, giving them a visual representation of what the information looks like, while hearing grammar rules, vocabulary, or nonfiction text features. Students will use the Promethean ActivBoard daily as they learn to correct mistakes, write and edit papers, teach concepts to their peers and practice their public speaking skills. This will also give my students, who are afraid of answering a question wrong in front of their peers, an opportunity to answer questions during the lesson without their peers knowing who submitted the answer, decreasing their unwillingness to participate in class discussions.
This will help students to become more comfortable in speaking in front of an audience and give them a chance to get out of their seats, instead of always sitting in a desk day after day.
The students could physically move the words or sentences around on the board, letting them see how each part of the sentence works with each other. Having this technology would truly make the lesson interactive and engage the students not only mentally, but also physically in their learning.
