Mrs. Berra from Saint Louis MO is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a document camera to help reinforce lessons set by our new district curriculum.

A new curriculum?! This was a big surprise to hear at the very end of last school year. It was an even bigger surprise to find out that the district does not have funds to support the technology I am expected to use.
As a city school we struggle to find the finances to provide our students with everything they need to be successful.
I try my best to use my own money to get my students what they need, but technology is expensive! My 7th-grade students are from low-income families that live in the St. Louis City. They, too, find that purchasing the basic school supplies is hard and providing technology or assistance to the school to purchase technology is even harder. Many families struggle to make ends meet and education at times takes a back seat. Life is hard for many students and it shows in their academics. All students want to be successful and with the right books and lessons they will be successful. With the right tools in the classroom, I know that we can make an even bigger impact and have even more success.
With the adoption of a new curriculum, students will be reading from novels on a 7th-grade level (there are no textbooks). However, students who are not on level will struggle to read these books. My students will be better able to complete the same lessons, activities, and projects with my help in modeling through the use of a document camera. They will feel more successful when they know what to do and how to do it. They will not be discouraged by the difficulty of word choice, vocabulary, length of the story, or reading about complex topics because I will be able to scaffold the lessons and model what good readers do.
This will make a huge difference in the life of my students.
They will still feel like a part of the class as a whole because they will be able to complete the same work as their peers while also being able to actually read a book without frustration. They will not have the excuse to give up because they will have my help and examples. The document camera will allow my low-level readers to feel success and grow as readers.
