My Students

Fair isn't everyone getting the same thing, fair is everyone getting what they need to be successful. It is a great reminder that we each have our own unique needs and abilities. Choices in seating are just one way to meet the needs of extraordinary learners in our classroom.

Our Shining Star Classroom is a unique blend of students who are eager to learn.

Students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Our school is a Title 1 school. We have Universal Breakfast so that every child in our school starts the day with a free breakfast. We have students who are all different types of learners. Some students sit quietly and complete their work on their own, some work with partners or in small groups, while others need to move actively while working in order to be successful. Our classroom strives to embrace each learner and ensure that each child reaches his or her full potential. Differential seating is an important part of meeting each child's needs.

My Project

Students seated around the room, on the floor, propped against the wall, on stools, sitting at their desks, or lying on the floor- these are all options for students during independent work time. Using pillows and bean bags for comfortable seating is a great way to meet the needs of students. During Readers and Writers Workshop, students have the option to choose their seating location. In order to optimize student learning comfortable seating is an important option for students. Students learn better and are able to produce better when they are seated comfortably.

Being comfortable while working increases work output and helps students feel good about what they are doing.

You can help increase self esteem and help students work comfortably. Students who are given choices are happier and work harder than those forced to sit in a plastic chair behind a desk.
