Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Well, I say, "Rap with me and I will become excited about what I learn!"
After a year trial subscription to Flocabulary.com I saw my students not only learn, but get excited about our curriculum.
My school is an inner city 100% Title 1 school.
My students face all of the varied challenges of poverty. In addition this year, my class is going to be a four/five combination class. I am excited about both the opportunities and the challenges of teaching two grades.
On the one hand, it will be like getting a puppy when you already have a dog. My 5th graders will pave the way for the fourth graders. The fifth graders will have leadership opportunities and the fourth graders will have role models. On the other hand, I have twice the curriculum to cover. Efficiency is going to be very important!
Many of my students are also recently "Reclassified English Proficient" So, I am eager to provide lots of opportunities for them to continue to expand their academic vocabularies so they can quickly catch up with the native speakers.
Of course, I'm willing to bet all of my students like music! And what is more culturally relevant to "tweens" than rap?
My Project
I am asking for a one year subscription to the educational rap site, Flocabulary.com. Academic vocabulary and core content are embedded into catchy raps that my former students could not resist.
Last year, I had a trial subscription to Flocabulary. com and my students flourished learning even the most mundane vocabulary and academic concepts by rapping during breakfast in the class. Flocabulary is a research based program that uses rap songs to teach content across the curriculum. I was able to play a variety of their raps to either pre-teach or review most any subject lesson.
Students could also access Flocabulary at home and share the rap videos with their families. I loved seeing my kids cheer about subjects and predicates and rap (even on the playground) about the electoral college. In fact, Flocabulary raps were so popular they were often used as a reward. I know Flocabulary works because I can't get the raps out of my head! I find myself singing them on the drive to work.
In "Understanding Vocabulary" Francie Alexander says, "Words are the currency of communication.
A robust vocabulary improves all areas of communication — listening, speaking, reading and writing." I want to use Flocabulary.com to give my students a fun, memorable and rich vocabulary experience. I want them to own the currency of communication! Flocabulary.com is culturally relevant to my students and practical for me.
