  • King George Had a Problem and So Do We!

    Funded Mar 17, 2021

My students love to read books, but not many of them enjoy reading books about history as they can be a bit dry and unexciting. My students were thrilled when the "King George What Was His Problem? The Whole Hilarious Story of the American Revolution" books arrived and not only due to the fact that it has the longest title they have ever seen. I had read the book earlier on a recommendation and I knew it would really help my students enjoy learning about the Revolutionary War and they knew I was excited about sharing the book with them.

This book did exactly that. My students thoroughly enjoyed the book as history came alive to them. They enjoyed reading and discussing the book and I noticed a much improved engagement when discussing the history of the beginning of our country. We also enjoyed the many funny and eye-raising tidbits that the author provided.

Thank-you for making these books available for my class of fifth grade students. I can't wait until my new fifth grade students read this book together this spring.”

  • Classroom Rug for Sitting Students

    Funded Nov 23, 2019

My students and I are thrilled with a vibrant new rug for our classroom. It is located front and center in our classroom to give our room a cheery feeling when you first walk in. Our principal even came in and mentioned how much she likes the rug.

The best part of the rug, however, is not that it looks sharp in our room, but that the rug is such a central location for my students. When I read or have discussions with them, they are sitting on the rug. When they want to get a better view of a lesson, they come up and sit on the rug. When it is silent reading time, many come up and relax on the rug. When they are working on a group project, they like to do so when sitting on the run. So many good things happen while kids are sitting on the rug all throughout the day, every day.

I am happy that such a simple thing as a classroom rug can add more color, relaxation, and comfort to a central location in our classroom and that indeed helps my classroom to be a better place to learn.”

  • Reading Books that Engage Student Readers

    Funded Dec 8, 2019

Thank-you so much for helping to fund these books for my classroom. They will be used for read-alouds and for reading groups. I am very excited to add these titles to my classroom as they will encourage greater adventures in reading. The best part is that each of my students will now have access to a book when reading through each selection and while working on reading strategies, vocabulary, and comprehension as well as to tie-in to studies in history and when learning about other people and cultures.”

  • Printer Needed for my Students

    Funded Apr 9, 2019

Thank-you for supporting our projects for a classroom printer and ink cartridges. It has seen extensive use so far and has been an important part of our class. The school's printers are hard to reach and often not working. Now I can print things our right in the classroom and have them immediately available, so there is no waiting until I can find a working printer or leave the class.

The new printer also prints in color so it has been an easy way to print our posters and bulletin boards in color to help highlight important information in the classroom.

I have appreciated the freed up time that I received by having a classroom printer. Students no longer have to wait to get an extra or missing sheet printed out.”

  • Replace the Classroom Projector

    Funded Nov 28, 2018

Thank-you for your donations to replace the classroom projector in my classroom. So much of how we teach today, revolves around having a working classroom projector. We use it to display student work during math class so that students can demonstrate their thinking or to show short videos to reinforce understanding concepts during science lessons. We use it to show articles from Scholastic News as well as video introductions and vocabulary words before reading an article. There are multiple times throughout each day that I turn on the projector to help with my teaching. Without a projector, we had a difficult time doing the daily classroom routines that we normally do while learning. Now that we have the new projector installed and working, we are happy to report that we are back to learning in the best way that we can.”

  • Classroom Reading Books for Every Student

    Funded Nov 15, 2018

Thank-you for your donation that helped us acquire complete sets of reading books for my classroom. We now have a great collection of books to read together as a class. Since getting these books, we have already read "The Honest Truth" and the students were thoroughly engaged with the storytelling and the cliffhangers at the end of each chapter also have completed "Blood on the River" about Jamestown in 1607 as part of our Social Studies lessons. The class was very enthusiastic about this book and recommended it so much that my two 5th grade teammates will also now be using this book in their classrooms. They got a much better idea of what living in a new colony was like and the challenges that the early colonists faced. Currently, we are reading through "In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson" which my class is also loving. We even had two Chinese University students visiting our classroom for two weeks during the time we started reading the book to offer their perspective of growing up in China.

My students all enjoy reading and talking about the books that we read together in class and these books and the others that we have yet to read has opened up their minds in new ways and have helped my students continue to love and appreciate good literature.”

  • Inspirational Story Books from Africa

    Funded Nov 12, 2018

Thank-you for your donations for these inspirational story books about people from Africa who have overcome challenges or used their creativity to solve problems. We will be using these books in a unit on the people of Africa that will be starting at the end of winter vacation. I am excited to be able to share these books with my students and have been writing plans to use with these books. I know that my students will enjoy these stories and will become more aware of life outside our neighborhood and country.”

  • Stand Up and Balance for Tension-Free Learning

    Funded Jan 8, 2018

Thank-you for the donation for our two classroom Fluidstance standing decks. They are a wonderful addition to our classroom. My students were very excited to unpack and try out the new standing decks. My one concern with having them in my classroom was that if someone left a deck on the floor, then another student may trip over it. After unpacking, a student noticed that they fit perfectly on the shelves of my two standing desks when not in use. That meant that they would never be left unattended on the floor.

My students enjoyed trying out and then using the decks. They may seem to be an unusual addition to a classroom, but they prove to be a most used addition. My students love working on the standing decks and being allowed to move around silently as they are doing so at my two classroom standing desks. The Fluidstance decks allow them to twist, shift, and rotate back and forth as they work. This allows for enough movement to satisfy their need to move without bothering anyone else. Students that may usually feel the need to wander are instead able to move around in one spot. They are able to focus better on their work or a lesson as they use the deck and they are used continuously throughout the day. They have been a superb and useful addition to my classroom and they help create a better learning experience for my students.”

  • Toss and Talk with the QBall Microphone

    Funded Oct 31, 2017

Thank-you for your donations to help us get the QBall Microphone for our classroom. The class was very thrilled to get this fully funded and were particularly excited when it arrived in the mail.

We quickly got it working and put it to good use. The QBall is very effective when students have a hard time hearing their classmate's voices. It projects their voices over the classroom speakers and everyone can now hear each other very clearly. We particularly enjoy the use of the QBall when playing classroom games, such as the "I have...Who Has..." games that we play to review information for upcoming tests. Of course, everyone enjoys talking into the ball and throwing it carefully to the next person. I notice the class is more engaged when we use it.

Thank-you again for your generosity in helping us fund this fun and useful addition to our classroom.”

  • Standing Up for Better Focus and Health

    Funded Dec 8, 2016

My class was real excited when the two stand up desk arrived for our classroom. They had heard the hype and they were ready to experience using a stand up desk. The first thing we did was have students help assemble the desks. That is a learning experience in itself. Then we set them up in the back of our classroom. They were an immediate hit. Everyone has a chance for spending some time (usually 30-45 minutes) at the stand up desks on a rotating basis. I was curious about their reactions and was happy to see that the desks are in constant use as my students really enjoy using them and will mention to me how they benefit from using these desks.

My students remark that standing at the desks and using the swing bar helps them focus better during lessons and that they feel less anxious about taking math tests when they are standing at the desk. I sometimes notice that some kids will stand when doing work at their own desks as they feel more comfortable and engaged when doing so. One day the assistant principal came in to observe a math lesson that I was teaching. At the bottom of her notes on the lesson, she made a written comment about how impressed she was when she noticed the two students using the stand up desks. She said they were thoroughly engaged and focused on the lesson while using the desks at the back of the room.

Thank-you for helping to make these desks a part of our classroom and leaning experience through your contribution to the project.”

I teach grade 5 in a public school classroom. Currently there are 23 students in the class. It is a happy class full of children who enjoy learning and each other. They enjoy being creative and aspire to do their best at school. The children come from a variety of backgrounds, but it is mostly middle class although our school qualifies as a moderate poverty school.
