My students represent a variety of reading levels, however over 2/3 of them are 1-3 grade levels behind in their reading level. Their reading level affects their ability to do well on state standardized tests, their comprehension in other core classes (Language Arts, Science, etc.), and and their overall access to information. The majority of my students associate the word "boring" with reading because they have not had access to books that pique their interest or to which they can relate. My students are incredibly curious about the world around them and love learning, however the stigma they associate with reading has prevented them from applying this curiosity to literature.
