  • Meaningful Morning Stations

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

I have never been more excited to be awake at 12:30 in the morning. 23 fifth graders are going to EXPLODE with excitement tomorrow morning when I share that our Morning Stations have been fully funded. You could not know how much we needed this boost of sunshine as we head into state testing very soon!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Spann

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and READ!

    Funded Dec 13, 2011

I wish I could have captured the excitement on my students faces when the boxes from our Donors Choose project started to arrive. They were so excited!

We have been hard at work this month reading the books we received from this project. They are learning so much about recycling, pollution and taking care of our Earth. It is quite heartwarming to see such little people become so passionate about recycling and conservation!

The hardest part has been getting them to wait to publish their own persuasive stories about taking care of our Earth. They want to use the blank books and colored pencils so badly! When we come back from Spring Break, they will be ready to publish their writing and transfer it over to the blank books. We can't wait!

Thank you so much for your donations. Every one of you has truly made an impact in our classroom. When the materials arrived, I explained to my students that we were receiving these items because a group of people wanted to grant a "wish" for our classroom. They were amazed. Thank you for letting them know that someone cares about their education. Thank you for supporting a project that not only ties into our curriculum, but also gives them a real (and fun!) purpose for writing. Thank you for bringing quality literature and literacy materials into our classroom. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Spann

  • Phonics Fun For Everyone!

    Funded Sep 17, 2011

The games and language materials you so graciously donated have been such a hit! My students come in every morning excited to get them out and play with their friends. Their cooperative learning skills are growing in ways I never even anticipated.

Our students are progressing and growing every day with the phonics games, stamps and sight word manipulatives. They are constantly asking to work on their reading goals using our new supplies and resources. Without your support, none of this would be possible.

Again, it is an honor to have this project funded in Eloise's memory. Thank you so much for choosing our classroom as a way to remember her. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Spann

  • From Broken to Brand-New!

    Funded Apr 22, 2010

I was so excited when I came into school one day in late August and saw two HUGE boxes with my name on them!! Our janitor even put them together for me so my un-handy (but sweet!) husband wouldn't have to. :)

The storage units are beautiful! We are using one to store our weekly guided reading materials in. It's so nice to have a place where my ESOL teacher, my special education co-teacher and I can all store our books for the student groups we work with. We also keep our conferencing materials there so we can meet with students and take anecdotal records in a unified spot in the classroom. Your generosity has brought back the organization we were sorely lacking when our old bookshelves crashed last year.

The second unit is currently housing the students' literacy and language arts center materials. The thing I especially love about this is that the storage unit is mobile. It can roll safely to a spot in the classroom where all of our students who are working independently can access it.

I am truly grateful for your donation to our classroom. The success of my first Donors Choose project has inspired several other teachers in my school to try the website. You will be the reason so many more children at our school will be impacted by Donors Choose. :)”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Spann

I am currently working as an Interventionist in a Title 1 school. I pull students one on one or in very small groups to tackle reading and math skills to help them "close the gap." Previously, I spent 13 years as a 3rd grade classroom teacher. 70% of the students in my school speak English as a second language. 98% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. These are not families who can afford to help me purchase or replace something, but they work hard to make sure their children come equipped to learn each day. I work in an amazing school with people who know poverty is not a learning disability! My job is not easy, but I remind myself that I have been entrusted with these children for a reason. I believe my first job is to make all of my students feel loved and nurtured. The academics always fall into place once they understand that school is a warm and safe place to be.
