Learning to Love to Read

Funded Jun 29, 2013

My students have greatly enjoyed reading Anna Sewell's "Black Beauty." Because I teach high school students, and this book is only a 4th grade level, it is encouraging to my struggling readers. The student also enjoy the book because the story is engaging.

We are using the book in my Equine Science classes to gain perspective about a horse's life, especially when horses were used as a primary mode of transportation. This book traces the ways horses age and what happens to them when they are no longer useful to people.

This boosts our learning because learning to read for fun is an important life skill. Students are allowed to read this book at their own pace, with no benchmark or consequence for reading slowly. In addition to being encouraged to read, the story also is applicable to our classroom material.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Rymel
