Surviving 6th Grade With Books!

Funded Jul 24, 2014

As students walked into my room the second week of school, their eyes lit up! They saw a classroom filled with new and exciting books to read. The first activity I did with the students was called a book pass. Each student had a book on their desk. I turned on music and they walked around the room until the music stopped. When the music stopped, they stopped at the desk they were at and read the back cover of the book at the desk and a few pages. Students wrote down which books they might want to read. They were so excited to have so many new choices.

Over the next few weeks, books were still trickling in and I would put them up on my whiteboard. Within seconds, that book would be checked out by a student. They have been excited to read and continue to read books from the same series and author. Students read everyday for 20 minutes. From what I can see, most students have been completely engaged in their reading.

Recently, we took a test called the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) which measures a student's reading level. Many students in my class increased their reading score by more than 1 grade level. Almost every student has already shown significant reading growth this year. It has been wonderful to have books that match the content themes in our language arts curriculum.

I know the students and I have enjoyed each book that has been donated. Thank you for believing in and caring for the students of Hobart Middle School!”

With gratitude,
