Passport To The World: Show Me Africa!
Funded Dec 1, 2010I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful the books were for my classroom! My students did an amazing job working in groups and learning more about Africa's cultures. I could spend a lot of time raving on them, but I thought you might appreciate reading some of their responses to the books they read.
"It is like I am walking along with them." --Mariya, They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky. "I think this book is incredible! It tells of a 12 year old boy who does his best to survive from the rebels. This book brings out deep feelings of emotion, you might not feel this all the time, but when you stop and think, "Wait, this is a true story about a TWELVE year old boy that experiences things not even adults should endure," your emotions will burst, even from the coldest of hearts. I have learned many things about the wars going on in Africa's countries. The thing I've learned the most about is how hard life is in Africa and what people go through every day." --Seth, A Long Way Gone
"When I read this (about Bambo's death) I felt really sad because I know what the loss of a parent feels like and I know it hurts. I felt even worse because Bambo was their only means of survival besides Binti and Junie can't go to school because there won't be money and I know after the loss of a parent (for some reason) school because the number one thing for me. I thought it was sweet when Kwasi continued trying to build the coffins." –Ephenie, The Heaven Shop
"If you were to ask me about how fitting the title of this book is to the story, I would say that you could never pick a better title for this book. First off, the title and picture tell you right before you open the book that it's going to grab you and pull you into an emotional roller coaster. The title fits in the way that in the beginning when rebels destroy his home and way of life he flees and becomes a long way gone from his home and his family. When Ishmael becomes a soldier and a savage killer, he is a long way gone from his old personality and sanity. He becomes a completely new person from the one he was in Mattru Jong. I think this is a perfect title for a book like this." --Justice, A Long Wy Gone
These responses speak for themselves. When I requested for this project to be funded I said, "It is my hope that the books selected will open my students' eyes to what it is like to live in Africa. They will experience African culture, hardships, language, and more. This level of learning would not be attainable through text books alone." And let me tell you, real learning happened. I have watched some of my students grow into concerned global citizens that desire to know more about other cultures and how they can be a part of making a difference.
Thank you so incredibly much for making this possible.
God Bless. ”

This classroom project was brought to life by Townsend Press and 7 other donors.Three Cups of Tea
Funded Feb 26, 2010I cannot begin to fully express my excitement and thanks for your donations to my project! It is amazing to know that people around the world are pitching in to help my students succeed!
Three Cups of Tea has already been a HUGE success with my students, and I can not wait for the opportunity to share the story with future students. The book really helps open their eyes to see that there are many kids around the world that are not nearly as fortunate as they are. Many of my students have begun to appreciate their education and are now interested in ways they can help other kids have the same opportunities.
The books will not only promote appreciation for education, they will also aid in comprehension of the text. Being able to hear and see the words will make a big difference for many kids. They will also get a better look at the amazing pictures that are included in the text. I can't wait to pass out the new books and let the kids flip through the pages themselves!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart!
P.S. My apologies on the pictures posted. I accidentally posted pictures from the other project that I had funded and I can't go back and change the pictures. ”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Barnoskie
Down the Rabbit Hole -- Let the Mystery Begin!
Funded Mar 5, 2010Thank you so much for your help in donating these books to my classroom! My students are in the middle of reading the book right now and are truly enjoying every minute of it! The kids love the opportunity to be the first to solve the mystery.
It has been a huge blessing for my students to have a class set of books. It has given them opportunities to read independently and in groups and also to follow along when we read aloud.
We also do a "mystery festival" in our class along with reading the book. I have posted pictures of the mystery festival--they really love it.
Thanks again for your support!
God Bless! ”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Barnoskie
