My 12 second graders were selected from the lowest achieving first graders to participate in Ignite Learning, an intensive leveled math and reading small group program. They are hungry to learn, and motivated by competition, technology use, and are showing remarkable growth! The 8 girls and 4 boys I teach are not eligible for special education services, but are all at least one grade level below average in both math and reading. Some are reading on a beginning kindergarten level! Although all my students are below grade-level, there are five different reading levels represented, and four distinct levels of math competency. These boys and girls are the sweetest children, but realize their deficits, suffer from low self-esteem, and often lash out at each other as a result. My students come from low-income, many single-parent, families. Their parents rarely have the time, money, or resources to read or study with their children, which lessens their chances of life-long success.
