Our coding students are a unique combination of 4th, 5th, & 6th grade GATE students who come twice a week, excited to work together to learn computer science skills. Many of them even continue their work at home on their spare time! In this class, they develop essential 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication, persistence, and problem solving. While this is an outstanding group of students with many excellent qualities, one of the things we are most proud of is how their composition defies many of the typical statistics about computer science classes and the field itself. For example, according to code.org, only 1 in 10 schools even teach computer science. Furthermore, only 0.7% of 2012 high school AP enrollment was in computer science. Of this group, only 15% were women. Of the 27 students in our class, 13 are girls, which is nearly 50% of our class! While only 8% of that HS AP group were Hispanic or African Americans, a majority of our class is!
