  • Reading Is FUNdamental!

    Funded Aug 8, 2024

On behalf of our students and staff, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for your generous support of the Reading is FUNdamental project. Thanks to your contribution, we have been able to expand our classroom libraries with a wide variety of books that have truly made a difference in our students' reading journeys.

Your donation has not only provided our students with access to new and exciting texts but has also enhanced their learning in ways we couldn't have imagined. With the fresh books now available, we've been able to introduce our students to a world of stories, characters, and ideas that spark their imagination and curiosity. From picture books to chapter books, our classroom has become a vibrant space of reading exploration.

Reading in our classroom is dynamic and engaging. We focus on a mix of independent reading, guided reading groups, and interactive discussions. Every day, you can see students eagerly picking up books that cater to their interests—whether it's adventure, mystery, or friendship—fostering a sense of excitement around reading. These texts are also helping us build essential literacy skills, such as vocabulary expansion, comprehension, and critical thinking. We are seeing improvements in fluency and confidence as our students read aloud, participate in group discussions, and reflect on what they've learned.

Your support has allowed us to focus on more than just reading the words on the page. We've been able to dive deeper into themes and life lessons, such as empathy, resilience, and problem-solving. Books now serve as a tool for fostering social-emotional learning, as well as academic growth. Through shared readings, students are developing skills in collaboration, communication, and expressing their thoughts clearly.

It's clear that your gift has had a lasting impact, and we couldn't be more grateful. Thanks to your support, we're not just teaching students to read; we're teaching them to love reading, to explore new worlds, and to see books as windows to endless possibilities.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Furlong

  • Reading is the Key to the Future

    Funded Apr 8, 2011

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for donating to our classroom project!!! Our document camera has impacted my teaching and our class' learning in SO many ways. We are using the camera every single day, in all subjects. The students love being able to share something with the entire class all at one time. Gone are the days of "I can't see the picture" or " What does that say". We are now living in the world where notes can be done in multiple colors, books can be shared with the entire group, and examples can be created in real time with authentic student work! We love all the things we can do!

I am looking forward to receiving copies of Time For Kids magazine once next school year starts! My students will enjoy learning and studying about real world events written in kid friendly language. I will enjoy having more nonfiction to share with them.

Thank you again so much for donating to this project! You are an invaluable part of my classroom, and to education!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Furlong

We are at a charter school that receives much less funding than our public school counterpart. Although our school was the first charter school in the district, we are treated like the "red headed step children" in terms of financial support. Our families are from lower income areas, and often do not have the money to purchase the school uniforms and lunches. We are a charter school that welcomes all students grades K-8 within a challenging Core Knowledge curriculum.
