Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Dawes School is a Chicago Public School located in the Ashburn Community. 88% of the children are considered low-income and receive free/reduced lunch. The student body is 53% Hispanic, 40% African American, 6% Caucasians and 1% Asian. Life-long readers are developed when reading is encouraged at home. On March 30, 2005, Dawes School will host the 2nd annual Family Reading Night. The purpose of our Family Reading Night is to spend time together as a family reading. Last year, over 500 students attended with their families. We hope to increase that number this year. All students (1,100 in grades pre-kindergarten through eight) are invited with their families to attend the event. Family Reading Night will take place from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Families will visit four workshops held throughout the school building. Teachers and teachers' assistants will provide a "hands on" workshop at the primary, intermediate, and upper grade levels. A computer workshop will also be offered. This workshop will help families learn to navigate family appropriate websites on the Internet. Parents have volunteered to work the registration table and also in the Dawes Parent Lending Library. Southwest Airlines will provide snacks (juice and cookies). Money from our annual Dawes Family Fundraiser will provide materials for the workshops. Last year, a former teacher of Dawes School donated 500 Family Reading Night t-shirts. The t-shirts were a big hit! Students are allowed to wear the t-shirts on gym days. It is great to see so many students proudly wear their shirts each week. The shirts continue to promote family reading throughout the school year. We would like to give a shirt to every student this year who participates in this family/school event. We also would like to provides books for the children to take home as their own. I am asking for a donation of t-shirts and books to support our Dawes Family Reading Night. Thank you, Dawes Family Reading Night Committee.
