I am an elementary teacher at a Title 1 school in the valleys of North Carolina. My husband and I both teach at the same school. I teach 2nd grade and he teaches 3rd grade. Every year we have been getting our classes together to do some multi-age grouping to celebrate Cinco De Mayo as we discover more about the beautiful Latino cultures in our community.
We teach the children the customs celebrated; we make food typical of the Latino culture; we introduce guests from our community that teach us about the Latino customs.
We would love to extend this into multi-age reading as well. Our plan is to get the age groups together to choose from reading material about famous Latin People who celebrate their customs in various ways. From this they would work together to read the materials requested, then they would write down important facts about the customs and culture in a learning journal we would make for them. Next, they would go to the computer lab to create a presentation based on the best information they added to the learning journal.
They could use powerpoint, make a brochure, or create a research project explaining customs of the Latino Culture. They would compare what they know about the American culture and see how Latino cultures are alike and different. They would present the projects around the time of Cinco De Mayo.
We would also like to include viewing materials which will allow children to experience a glimpse of life in a Latino country so we could share aspects of the culture with the students on Cinco De Mayo.
We would like to request some literature and viewing materials for oral reading and listening, as well as literature for multi-age partner reading that would incorporate information and stories typical of Latino culture.
The children would add to the excitement of their learning by engaging in reading that broadens the scope of what they are learning. When they are finished with this unit, the children will be able to compare what they have learned about Latino culture to other cultures we share every day in one another. They will also have an opportunity to share in the successes of one another as they read and experience aspects of Cinco De Mayo. This is an opportunity to celebrate our cultural heritage.
