Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
In my economically disadvantaged school, with over 95% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch, literacy in 2nd grade is a tremendous challenge. One of the biggest roadblocks - VOCABULARY! Our students just don't hear enough of a variety of words at home and therefore start out with a huge disadvantage. One thing that our students do not lack is the ability to allow their minds to wander during a lesson. Why not take advantage of this time and make these two issues compliment each other! How you ask? Simple. Use technology to constantly display recently encountered vocabulary words over and over in the background throughout the entire day! By connecting a simple television set to a laptop (equipped with PowerPoint) and constantly running a slideshow of new vocabulary words, the students will know the words through the magic process of "osmosis". This truly makes every minute of the day worthwhile. This will help supplement one of the hardest components (yet most crucial) of literacy to teach.
We DON'T need the laptop or PowerPoint - all our class needs is a television set. This will help to affect over 70 students and when it is successful, maybe funding on a wider scale from our own district and school will occur to affect all students! Help make this experience possible to my kids. Bring technology into a classroom that truly needs it! This project will help our kids exactly where they need it most. It will also help close that vocabulary gap between my school and more affluent schools, helping to close the ever widening gap in literacy. Make this experience possible, all that's needed is a TV.
