I would like a digital camera and printer to engage and motivate students in their writing endeavors. The first project I would like students to complete involves a self-portrait in which students write about what a person in the community would think of them (a project published by Julie Plasencia in the SF Chronicle magazine). The second project involves students taking a picture of themselves in their bedroom and writing about how their room expresses who they are. I would also like to have the students take pictures of people and places in their lives that will motivate them to write. In addition, the materials can be used throughout the school year to display pictures of student projects and activities. I teach a Severely Disordered Language Day Class for ninth through twelfth graders. My students on average read and write at the third grade level. Most of them are from economically disadvantaged homes. They are very apathetic and unmotivated to do well in school. Capuchino is a public high school in San Bruno, California. My current class size is 12 students. Our school has two digital cameras for the teachers to check out; however, I want the students to be able to check out the cameras. I believe this will motivate the students to complete their written assignments and increase their motivation at school.
