The Giant microbes kit features soft, cuddly replicas of not so cuddly real germs. They are cute, but accurately represent real germs, only they're a million times the actual size!
These cuddly germs caught my attention as resources I could use to help my 4th grade students better understand the concept of "cells in living things", particularly germs they encounter on a regular basis as children and students in a regular public school classroom of 26 students. Without the benefit of age appropriate microscopes and specimen slides for viewing, I believe having the opportunity to handle microscopic "germs" that are unthreatening to the appearance may help students to understand the importance of hygiene, especially the "School Nurse Gift Set" which includes the Louse, Sore Throat, Stomach Ache, Cold, Cough, Earache, Flu, and Mono microbes - the germs most common in schools. Currently our fourth grade team teaches 80 students, therefore, these germs would "get around" to more than the 26 students in my regular ed classroom.
One of our school's goals this year is centered around improved attendance. Yearly, especially during the cold and flu season, we find a "growth" in student and staff absences, mainly due to an unawareness of proper hygiene and the way germs are spread. It is my goal to help my students understand the way a virus reproduces and how to prevent to spread of germs.
