  • Learning Leadership Through Literacy

    Funded May 4, 2015

Thank you so much for taking the time to support the Leadership initiative at Dobson. This process has been invaluable to our students and we have already seen a great change in our school community. By adding these books to our school library of Leadership resources, we are able to address the Leader In Me and the 7 habits into literacy instruction through shared reading, guided reading and much more.

Helping our children draw connections between what they are learning about how to be a leader and literature will help them internalize these skills and make them more personal. Thank you again!

I don't have pictures to post as I am no longer teaching at Dobson, but I can't thank you enough for supporting this project! I know these materials will be put to fantastic use.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tierney

  • Keyboards: The Key to Success in Music!

    Funded Jul 23, 2014

I can't begin to thank each of you enough for taking such an active interest into the lives and education of our students. In this time of incredible political debate around education, it is nice to know that the quality of instruction, despite the profound budget crisis we find ourselves in, will be increased because of these materials.

My student's are beyond excited to begin using these keyboards, and have already begun to draw parallels to a lot of the other work we have done using the barred instruments that Donorschoose helped us get earlier this school year.

I have heard things like "Ms. Tierney, wow listen to what I came up with!!" to "Ms. Tierney, can I come in at Lunch to play?".

Thanks for helping me to provide a new creative outlet!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tierney

  • Instruments Spark Imagination and Creation!

In this time of incredible political debate around education, it is nice to know that the quality of instruction, despite the profound budget crisis we find ourselves in, will be increased because of these materials.

My student's creativity has literally exploded over the last few weeks as they have had opportunities to improvise and explore using these fantastic instruments. Before they come into each class they ask if we will be using them. They have truly made a profound impact!

I have heard things like "Ms. Tierney, this spring drum is awesome!!" to "Ms. Tierney, when we work together to play these instruments, it takes a lot of team work and we sound beautiful together! I look forward to music every week!".

Thanks for helping me to provide a new creative outlet!”

My student's creativity has literally exploded over the last few weeks as they have had opportunities to improvise and explore using these xylophones. Before they come into each class they ask if we will be using them. They have truly made a profound impact!

  • Music through Literacy

    Funded Feb 12, 2014

Reading is the key to unlocking an entire world of information and experiences for our students. Our students are voracious readers, so incorporating reading into our Music curriculum was a natural progression and addition with the adoption of the PA common core standards.

Our new Game Plan curriculum has specific books that correspond with various lessons throughout the year and across grade levels. Thank you for helping me to purchase the books that fit in with this series.

These books have helped our student to understand that music can be the key to surpassing reading difficulties, creating compositions, body percussion routines and much more.

Thank you for taking an active interest in my classroom. All of you are really the "Angels" behind my classroom's success. I couldn't do what I do without your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tierney

  • Bucket Drumming is Buckets of Fun!

    Funded Nov 28, 2013

I can't begin to thank each of you enough for taking such an active interest into the lives and education of our students. In this time of incredible political debate around education, it is nice to know that the quality of instruction, despite the profound budget crisis we find ourselves in, will be increased because of these materials.

The amount of fun my students have had using these drum sticks over the last few months has been incredible. Each has had the opportunity to apply all of their knowledge of music theory, musicality and team work to play complex patterns and to use good playing technique all while having a blast.

I have heard things like "Ms. Tierney, can I take a pair of sticks home to show my mom what I can do?" to "Ms. Tierney, I never thought I'd say this, but playing these sticks is actually a really relaxing and calming thing for me. I look forward to music every week!".

Thanks for helping me to provide a new creative outlet!”

  • Listening Center: Music to Our Ears

    Funded Nov 15, 2013

I can't begin to thank each of you enough for taking such an active interest into the lives and education of our students. In this time of incredible political debate around education, it is nice to know that the quality of instruction, despite the profound budget crisis we find ourselves in, will be increased because of these materials.

Over the last few months, my students have benefited exponentially from the materials purchased through this project. Each student now has a listening journal where they record their observations, opinions about a piece of music as well as musical features (instrumentation, form, dynamic variations, style, etc.). The listening center has made listening to a variety of types of music not only fun, but a totally collaborative experience. It has been amazing to hear students as you as 2nd grade having incredibly deep conversations about a piece of classical music. Sharing opinions, discussing what their hearing, and speculating about composer's choices.

The iPod Nano has benefited more than I could have ever hoped. It has helped enhance every musical rehearsal, choir practice, classroom activities and even student practice. Students will come in at lunch to listen to music that was rehearsed at choir, to practice in small groups and help plan and load music for assemblies.

The iPod has helped students really work together (outside of rehearsal time) to improve his or her individual and collective performance skills. They no longer have to wait for me to access the materials they need to rehearse.

Photos posted are from our winter concert and during a classroom activity where we were able to use both items to help our students reach major levels of success! Our students are extremely proud of their work!!”

  • Rockin' Recorders!

My students are so excited to begin to use these new recorders! We have discussed similarities and differences between the different types of recorders and what their playing expectations will be. Please be assured that we will be taking very good care of these instruments.

By giving children well made instruments, you give them an opportunity to hear good musical tone and to be successful with much less stress and anxiety.

The never ending snow has derailed our playing a bit, but we are now ready and raring to go!”

  • Well-Loved Materials Need Updating

    Funded Sep 9, 2013

I can't begin to thank each of you enough for taking such an active interest into the lives and education of our students. In this time of incredible political debate around education, it is nice to know that the quality of instruction, despite the profound budget crisis we find ourselves in, will be increased because of these materials.

Over the last month, my students have been thrilled to have a pencil sharpener that actually sharpens their newly purchased pencils, their recorder music is nicely organized and easily accessible throughout class, and have loved the new activities that we are able to plan and execute with our new white board markers and page protectors. Music is coming to life for each of them, because they have new, high quality materials to work with.

Each of my students have been profoundly impacted by your generosity and it is my hope to pay it forward in the near future.”

  • Rhythm Rocks!

    Funded Mar 18, 2013

Thank you all so much for taking the time to donate to my project. My students and I can't thank you enough for helping us get new instruments for music class. There experiences in music class have become much more interactive and, to be totally honest, fun because they can all play and participate in each activity.

My students have been so honored by your generosity. They have and will continue to treat these instruments with care and respect. They truly understand how fortunate they are to have people like each of you to support them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tierney

Our school has over 300 fantastic students in grades K-8 general education, K-8 Autistic Support and an Emotional Support Classroom. Coming from across Philadelphia, our students out perform almost all other schools our region of the city, even though most come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. Our students are fortunate enough to have General Music and Graphic Arts at two times every week! They are excited and very eager to learn about music, play instruments, and they LOVE to sing. Due to budget cuts, supplies are at a premium. Our teachers must purchase their own copy paper and other supplies. The instruments in the music room are falling apart, and it is impossible for each student to play during the class period. Our students greatly appreciate your generosity and the generosity of the Donor's Choose community.
