  • Makerspace Magic: Crafting Supplies

    Funded Dec 19, 2014

The students at CMS have been enjoying the addition of crafting supplies to our makerspace tremendously! Thank you so much for contributing to this project, is has helped us to add a new, fun element to our current makerspace environment.

Our students have particularly taken to the Rexlace for making braid key chains. For me, this is bringing back a middle school tradition, as this is something that we did in Shop class when I attended CMS as a student many years ago. Numerous students are visiting the library to use the Rexlace, Duck tape, Rainbow Looms, and other crafting resources to express their creativity and make things.

We are currently in our final nine week grading period with lots of testing underway, and students are especially appreciative of these supplies as it provides them with an outlet to be creative and have fun during a time that is particularly stressful for them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Whitehead

  • Makerspace Magic!

    Funded Oct 15, 2014

Our students were so excited when we received the materials from this DonorsChoose project to help create our library makerspace! They are having a blast with all of the maker tools -- LEGOs for our LEGO Wall, they Makey Makeys, the Snap Circuits, and the Sphero (which we named Henry).

The students are using these makerspace tools every chance they get. They're getting lots of use with my 8th grade advisory class and when the library is open for 7th and 8th graders during their lunch shifts. It's amazing to see how smart and creative some of our students are when they're learning to use these resources -- they've taught me and their peers so much when exploring and creating with these tools!

What's been most interesting is to see the range of students coming together to create, tinker, and build in our makerspace. Many students who didn't really have a niche at school have found something that really gets them excited about learning and creating in the makerspace. Also, these resources really foster teamwork and collaboration, helping students build and develop these important skills.

Thank you so much for supporting our school, our library, and our students through this project. This makerspace really is a magical place!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Whitehead

At a time when so much emphasis is placed on the weight of standardized testing, my students need more opportunities to learn, create, and discover their passion without the worry of a score or grade. The 1000 students in 6-8 grade at our school would thrive in a space designed for them to build, tinker, and create. They need an environment where it is okay to try new things and fail, because the best learning happens in a setting where failure is okay and just another opportunity to try again.
