  • "Boys Hate to Read"? No, We Love Reading!

    Thank you so much for your donations. We've had them for several months and they are getting a lot of use. Currently we are using some of the books purchased, while supplementing with other borrowed books, to do a Number the Stars unit in Reading class.

    The graphic novels are great for the ESL students to transition into chapter books.

    The Mysterious Benedict Society is a favorite of my several students. I'm so glad and fortunate to have y'all as helpers to get books of all different levels.

  • Love For Literacy! ESL Students Adore Graphic Novels

    Thank you so much for your donations! We received the books a couple weeks ago and the students practically dove right in the box. The book center is a great storage device, as you can see from the picture, and the students are absolutely loving the books. The girls particularly love the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series, and so do I-- never before have these girls really been able to shout with pride "I'm on page 160!" after only a few days of reading. The pictures are fantastic, and this gift has such a long reach-- for my future students, and many of my current ones, who will hold on to their love of graphic novels.

These students absolutely love to learn. I am blessed to teach 25 funny and intelligent young men who are driven and curious. I have taught them to embrace the phrase 'This is hard, BUT I like a challenge" and that is certainly what we face. Most students have been on the bilingual track, transitioning into their first year in English, however, many have come to the United States within the past year or two. We have made tremendous growth this year, they came in with English reading levels around Second grade, and we have jumped quite a bit. I am a self-contained teacher, meaning I have one class for the entire day and teach them all the subjects. It's going to be such a great year and even better with your help!
