  • Digital Collaboration Tools For My ESL Kids

    Funded Mar 30, 2015

My ELL students and I are deeply grateful for the Osmo Gaming System and the iPad connectors we received for our class. These resources enable us to have more access to digital resources that are available through the iPad. In particular the Osmo gaming system provides my students with a more engaging and collaborative ways of learning spelling and vocabulary. As second language learners, my students are able to learn more when they are able to "visualize" the concepts. Osmo taps into their visual and kinesthetic learning styles and as a result, learning new words is a lot easier, and more fun, too!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chavez

  • Wanted: Technology for English Language Learners

    Funded Sep 29, 2014

My students were very happy to see that we already have a projector for use in our ESOL classroom. They said that having a projector makes their learning more interesting, engaging, and more interactive. They know that it is easier for me - as the teacher - to model the activities to them or give instructions by just projecting them on the white screen.

With the projector, they are now able to watch interactive videos, movie clips, and play interactive games as part of our lesson. They are also excited to use the interactive whiteboard apps whenever we have whole group discussion and activities. My ESOL students can now watch and listen to our interactive books at the same time.

This project has definitely made my teaching a lot easier and effective, and my students' learning more meaningful. We are aware of the positive impact that technology, like the projector, can have in our classroom as it enables us to utilize all the available digital resources on the Web. By doing so, we are all preparing our students to acquire digital literacy and citizenship.

Thank you, dear donors for your support in making our classroom ready for 21st century learning!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chavez

Although most of my students speak Spanish at home, I have a few that speak Chinese, Bengali, Krio, and Ibo. They bring to the classroom the richness of their language and culture, which is what makes my teaching really interesting. A few of them have just arrived from their home countries so they do not speak any English at all. Their period of adjustment and assimilation comes at different phases, and it really takes a concerted effort to let them learn the language. We are a Title 1 targeted school with a diverse student and staff population. Almost all of my ESOL students qualify for free and reduced meals.
