Florida Citizens for Science 2010

  • $130raised
  • 2projects funded
  • 2schools served
  • 2teachers supported
Education budget woes felt throughout Florida are preventing many teachers from obtaining necessary science equipment, thus crippling them at a time when a brand new set of state science standards is demanding that they give students more in-depth science instruction. Let's help these teachers out, and let's get Florida students excited about science!
  • Dissection Connection -- Hands On Science Learning

    Funded Oct 7, 2010

This letter can only start to express my sincerest gratitude for your generous donation to our classroom learning project. The organisms you have donated for my students to dissect and learn about has greatly increased our hands-on learning opportunities. I have not only used the dissection activities to engage the students through hands-on learning, but they are able to see organisms that they might not normally be exposed to. During these activities the students are not only learning about the organisms they are working with, but also with working together, cooperation, and lab safety.

As with many other classes, money for the extras like dissections is not available. So without support from you and others like you activities like these would not be possible. The students know that my class is the class where these type of activities can happen and again I want to thank you for making this opportunity for them a reality!

For making our dream a reality, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Linneweber

  • Hands on Science!

    Funded Dec 20, 2010

My students and I want to thank you for your donation to my request. Already, the students have used the centers and want to keep using them over and over again - because they can find different ways to "play" with the materials and learn something new from them.

Your generosity has allowed me to provide hands-on ways for my students to explore science topics in a fun way and gives my students independent practice to meet the state mandated benchmarks. As a teacher, I already spend a LOT of money on things for my classroom. Your donation helped me provide materials (that will be used year after year) to support learning in my classroom.

Thank you again for supporting public education!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Douglas

  • The Votes Are In: Science Is Our Favorite Subject

    Funded Oct 9, 2010

Thank you all so much for your generous donation to our classroom. I didn't think our class could possibly be any more excited about science - that is until we used the sink or float science kit!

We were able to learn the process for conducting a science experiment and each student was able to test an object. We had a lot of fun making our predictions and then testing to see if we were correct. Students even began comparing some of the objects we tested to the solid figures we had been talking about during math time.

Over the next several days students began bringing in items they wanted to test. They were so excited that we ended up spending many more days experimenting with whether items would sink or float. It has been wonderful listening to them discuss their reasoning for their prediction with the other students. Now they can't wait to do the next science kit - magnets! Our class is so appreciative of your support, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Heater

  • Make No Bones About It

    Funded Dec 17, 2010

I want to thank you both for supporting my science students. They are really enjoying the model of the human skeleton you provided for the classroom. Students are learning the names and locations of many bones in their body. I have been surprised by the number of students who told me where they broke a bone when they were younger, and I was able to show them exactly where the break was.

The students were fascinated by all of the different joints of the body. The ability of the skeleton to be moved by the students really allows students to see how joints work.

They are having a great time with this model. It will provide many learning experiences in the future. Perhaps your gift will inspire some of my students to go on to be doctors or nurses.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stephan

  • Make Science Come Alive By Starfish Dissection Lab

    Funded Oct 9, 2010

We have just finished our two day starfish dissection lab and I want to let you know what a motivating force it has been for my students interest in Science! They all dressed up in home made trash- bag lab coats donned gloves and goggles as the waited for the unveiling of the starfish specimens. The room was a buzz with "oh they are so hard" and "look at those bumps" not to mention "Whats that smell?".Using the donated materials along with an instructional power point my students performed on level far above their expected grade norm. They focused on procedures , made many observations of both internal and external anatomy while drawing detailed diagrams in their lab journals. They were amazed to learn about the water vascular system, as they expected a circulatory system similar to ours instead. The eyespot's were another source of discovery , we had discussions, as to how starfish could locate food than use their tube feet along with rays to pull apart clams. After observering the mouth spines my students were concerned if starfish might like to bite people as well. Again please accept my thanks, without you this project would not have been possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Nova
