Please support my efforts in Science Bloggers for Students challenge, a friendly month-long competition (10/10/10 through 11/9/10) between science blogs to see which can do the most to help low-income classrooms on DonorsChoose.org. Pick a classroom project from the list to support. And let's beat the other bloggers! (By the way, DonorsChoose.org is a 501(c)3 charity. Thank you very much for your support of our music program. Your generous donation has kick-started a guitar program for our upper grade students. I have refurbished all of our student guitars with new strings. The method books that your donation purchased have provided me with the resources I needed to develop a unit that appropriately addresses the national standards for music education.
At this time of year, our upper-level students are preparing for their state tests. This is a very stressful time for the children and the classroom teachers. Our guitar unit could not have come at a better time! In our music classes the children are reading conventional music, performing for their classmates and composing their own songs. The children are engaged in their learning, enthusiastic about class, and expressing themselves musically. They leave the classroom with a sense of accomplishment and the biggest smiles I have seen all year! Thank you for your support of music education.”
I would like to express my gratitude for your support of scientific learning in my classroom. As a science teacher in a title one school, it can be hard to find the funds necessary to create an engaging and hands on learning environment. Your donation of stream tables, science learning games and globe have helped my students on their quest to become scientists.
The stream tables you provided allowed my students to see first hand how the earth is shaped by running water. They were able to set up the stream table and create a model of several parts of a river including the source, tributaries, floodplains, meanders and delta. Geology is very difficult for students to understand without a model to demonstrate what actually happens in nature.
The science learning games have been invaluable in remediation groups wherein students have used them for extra help with scientific vocabulary and hands on physics demonstrations. The globe has shown my children the location of global biomes, how the earth's tilt creates seasons and how earth's rotation creates day and night.
With your help my students have truly had the opportunity to become scientists and satisfy their hunger of scientific knowledge.”
I would like to extend my sincerest thank you for your help in funding our project. Your generous donation to our classroom has made it possible for my students to learn about different animals in habitats where they are able to live a similar life to that which they would live in the wild. We have had the opportunity to observe the geckos and hissing cockroaches in their habitats. My students have also had the opportunity to see and discuss how we take care of reptiles and insects. My students are very excited about our upcoming science time where we will take the hissing cockroaches out and hold them.
With the increasing struggles of budget issues that face our education system, students are unable to have these types of experiences without the help of wonderful people as yourselves. My students are enjoying the opportunity of learning science in a way that they will remember forever. They get the experiences with these animals first hand instead of hearing it from others or viewing it in a movie. You have given my students a way of looking at science that will encourage and inspire their learning throughout their school years and for that I am so thankful!”

Thank you so much for the items you gave to our school. We have planted a wonderful garden at the school and are working on it still, making sure it continues to thrive. The students are getting ready to pick some of the lettuce growing there!
Because of your donations and our committment to healthy lives for our children, some third grade students were able to go to the White House and meet with First Lady Michelle Obama and help her plant the White House garden. What an amazing and special experience. Our garden was on the news and in papers all over the country.
Again, thank you for the gifts you have given to us. Every student in the school has benefitted in some way from the items you gave. ”

I would like to formally thank you for your donation that made it possible for me to purchase for my students copies of the memoir A Long Way Gone. The class has enjoyed reading and discussing this child soldier's story of loss, violence, and recovery.
My students were shocked to learn that children are forced into fighting savagely, sometimes against other young children. They followed the author's journey through the jungles of Sierra Leone and then finally to the welcoming arms of the United States.
As my students read the unbelievable story, their understanding of the world grew. They learned of the past and current civil wars that destroy whole countries. They realized that they can make a difference by being globally aware and active in making change.
Again, thank you for playing a part in helping to make our world a safer and more humane place to live.”
I would like to personally thank you all for the donations going towards the supplies dealing with alternate energy sources. My students have explored the different topics of energy use and now have a deepened understanding of the resources available around them in their community.
Every grade I teach has had the opportunity to use the solar home kit, solar boat kit, camera, and camcorder that was supplied. All the students really enjoy the use of technology that is not readily available to our classrooms, so the experience was very worth while.
Thank you all again for all of your donations and supportative words! Your kindness is appreciated.”

Thank you for the materials you supplied to my classroom to support our alternative energy studies and science class in general. I am so glad my students had the opportunity to learn about solar energy through hands-on experiential activities. Light bulbs definitely went on! Additionally, the butcher block paper has been a huge boon. There have been many projects where it was very valuable for students to have large sheets of paper to use when working out ideas or making displays. Your donations really made a big difference ”

Thank you for your generosity, in a time of severe budget cuts to our schools. It has become challenging to have authentic learning experiences that engage students.
Your support to help bring our ecology project to life as been such a great and rewarding experience. Students thrive on hands on activities. This project not only brought smiles to my students but also a marine environment they will continue to maintain and love.
Your support has brought our ecology project to life!”

There are not enough words for me to use to let you know how appreciated your donation to my classroom has been. The alternative energy K-NEX models helped enrich my weather unit and discussions about the atmosphere, air pollution and how we can make strides to improve air quality. The students were very excited about building the models, researching the benefits and presenting to classmates.
The budget cuts have hurt the schools throughout our county. This donation has helped motivate over one hundred students that I teach. I got numerous comments from teachers and parents that the students were continually talking about the project, research and everything they were learning. I also look forward to using these models for years to come in my classroom with many other students.
Thank you for everything you have done to make my job easier. I greatly appreciate all of the support.
With Great Thanks,
Bridget Davis”

Thank you so much for your donation of the science materials. My students were so intrigued when they saw the new material. Immediately, we opened the box and began to play the games. During indoor recess my students have already begun choosing the new science materials to explore instead of random other board games. I have never seen my students so interested in science before. They are learning while having fun. Some of my students have begun asking if they could bring the science games home to play with their families. You have made a tremendous impact on the lives and learning of these students. Thank you again for your help and support.”
