  • Whisper Phones

    Funded Dec 2, 2013

Thank you so much for your donation to our project. The students have enjoyed using the whisper phones this year. It made our classroom environment quieter and easier for everyone to learn. While using the phones students would come to me and tell me that they sounded like a robot while reading. I told them that is what the whisper phones are for, to help them hear themselves read and to become better readers. After using the phones for quite some time, students would be excited and want to read out loud to the class. They were not embarrassed anymore. Their fluency and accuracy was improving and they wanted everyone in the class to know.

We used the whisper phones this year in small groups and also individually. One of my literacy stations is a "read to self" station and the whisper phones were housed at that station. During literacy time the students in that station would practice reading their library book or guided reading book to help them work on their accuracy and fluency. During guided reading groups with the teacher, we would use them to read over the book and discuss what they just read.

My students improved greatly in their confidence in their reading and it also helped them boost their interest in reading. Thank you again for your donation. It was greatly appreciated by the students and myself.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mitchell

  • Biotechnology Study

    Funded Nov 16, 2013

I want to thank you for your support. The microscope has been a great asset to both my biotechnology and Animal Science classes. Dirt is dirt, that is how most of my students thought of soil. With the use of the microscope you purchased I have been able to open up a window into a world they never imagine existed. We have studied the micro organisms the make up the natural world and how they impact our environment and our lives.

I know the students really appreciated the opportunity to use such a cool piece of equipment. They fight over who uses it first. Thanks again for your support of my students.”

  • Healthy Eating for All

    Funded Dec 31, 2013

I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. In reading, we so often use abstract explanations to explain abstract things.

The tools that you have funded will enable students to learn life lessons on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. These lessons will stick with them for their entire lives.

I hope to share with my colleagues a new technique in learning. Thank you so much. The benefits from this lesson will stick with them for the rest of their lives.”

  • A Chicks Grows!

    Funded Dec 2, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donations for an incubator. The students LOVE the incubator! I cannot express to you exactly how much they have enjoyed this project. It was a hands-on learning experience the students will NEVER forget!

Observing chicks hatch cemented my students' learning about the life cycle of chickens. It is one thing to read about a topic, but it is another thing to actually watch something in action. The excitement in my students' learning was amazing every day as they entered the classroom anxiously awaiting the arrival of our little chicks. They became the school 'experts' on the life cycle of chickens. All of the other students in the school checked in with my class to keep up with the progress of our project. This was cool as my students were able to teach all of the other students in the school. This project definitely motivated students and actively engaged them in learning.”

  • Help Bronx Students Go On a Miraculous Journey of Edward T!

    Funded Dec 3, 2013

Thank you so much for this wonderful donation! My students were thrilled to see a class set of Edward T. arrive for our literature class. Too often there are books I would love to read with my students, but coming across 25 copies for everyone can sometimes make it difficult. Edward T. is a wonderful story and I know my students will be excited to make it the last book we read together as a class for the school year. Thank you again for your incredible kindness and generosity. Please know that your donation will be remembered and enjoyed by all of my students, for many years to come!”

  • Enhancing Literacy Instruction with Scholastic News

    Funded Dec 15, 2013

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations that allowed us to purchase a subscription to Scholastic News for my 4th graders. My students were so excited to receive their first copy of the magazine and to learn how to utilize the online resources that come with the subscription. Each week they are eager to read the newest edition in class and then take it home to keep, which provides families in poverty with educational reading material. The articles and photos are engaging and at a 4th grade reading level, making them both fun and educational to read.

My class reads Scholastic News to themselves each week on Fridays. Students then answer the comprehension questions on the back and check their answers with a partner, which is excellent practice for reading assessments. We often use the online informational videos to practice including evidence from reliable sources in our non-fiction writing. Additionally, many students access the online, interactive version of the magazine at home, which has extra features and past issues available to read.

Our Scholastic News subscription has not only improved students' motivation to read non-fiction text, it has greatly improved their English reading skills and vocabulary while keeping them informed about current events. In our 90/10 Spanish/English dual-immersion program, 4th grade is the first year of formal English reading instruction. Despite their recent transition to English reading, 92% of my students met or exceeded on their state English reading test! Amazing! I am confident that reading Scholastic News has helped them become better readers.”

  • Learning Through Art

    Funded Dec 3, 2013

My students were very excited when they saw all of the new art smocks! We began using them right away for many projects! They were very determined to put them on all by themselves, since they are very kid friendly. I remember when they opened them they said they thought they smelled good...vinyl is the new air freshener? They also noticed the drying rack right away. Since they are so used to laying their work all over the counters, they were very happy to use the drying rack. My students have been very happy with all of the materials I have created using the paper cutter...but of course, I don't let them use that!

We have been using the watercolor paper and art smocks regularly to make paintings and collages of the things we are learning about. For example, we made oceans when we were learning about habitats and we made 100 dot paintings for our 100th day. I use the paper cutter every day for almost everything I make for my students! One project that it came particularly handy for was our Valentine's Day project where students made 3-dimensional roses out of paper strips that I cut using the paper cutter. All of our wet projects are easily stored daily on the drying rack which students quickly got used to using on their own. All of the resources given through this project have greatly impacted my classroom!

This project has really boosted my teaching now that I have the resources to quickly create tons of activities, manipulatives, and projects for my students. The watercolor paper makes it very easy to use some of the messier materials I have, such as paint and watercolor, which also makes the kid's artwork look amazing! This project also boosted student learning as I am now able to allow students to do many art projects without fear of getting paint or other messy materials all over their clothes using the art smocks. We have done many paintings and collages that show what we know about things like animals, plants, our 100th day, seasons, and much much more! We really appreciate your donations and look forward to doing more art in the classroom!”

  • Percy Saves the 5th Grade!

    Funded Dec 4, 2013

First, let me say thank you once again. My students were so excited to read this book. Everyday after we received the package of the books, they would ask if we were going to start the book today. The day we began reading, you could hear a pin drop because they were so interested in what they were reading. Every time we finished a chapter they couldn't wait to begin the next chapter. Now all of my students are reading the rest of the series because they enjoyed reading "The Lightning Thief" so much.

My students and I would read a chapter, they would then make a flow map summarizing the chapter at home, and the following day we would go over the flow maps as a whole class. Students would make corrections and additions to their flow maps as we reviewed the chapter and discussed questions that may have come up or were simply confused about. My students would dialogue about character motivation and the significance of different characters and events. We would follow this up with reading comprehension questions and various thinking maps addressing characters and subtopics within chapters.

This project has really enhanced student learning because my students are more interested in trying new literature when we go to the library. To varying degrees they have been working on projects and researching topics individually to enhance their personal learning; these are not projects for class, but simply to expand their own curiosity and knowledge. We are working on a new project in another subject and they are applying research strategies they learned from a Greek god/goddess project we did. They are asking deeper, more thoughtful questions about documents we are using for our current project.

Most importantly, they all enjoyed reading and they couldn't wait to read more. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sorge

  • Classroom Computing

    Funded Dec 2, 2013

Thank you for your kindness and generosity by donating to our classroom computer project. My students were surprised when the boxes arrived. I hope you can see the excitement on my students' faces.

We are working to meet mandated district requirements to complete math intervention and English/Language Arts intervention programs. This piece of technology will assist us on a daily basis as we work hard to meet our requirements.

With the addition of this laptop, we are able to create an interactive learning environment. This interactive environment will span across our first grade curriculum that includes reading, English/language arts, math, science, and social studies. The ability to use this across our curriculum is vital. We have wonderful teacher resources from our curriculum that require a computer for intervention and enrichment opportunities. This laptop technology is bringing learning to the forefront in our classroom. These technological resources engage our students and captivate their attention.

You have made a difference in the lives of children. Many thanks to you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jones

  • Helping Students With The College And Career Ready Program

    Funded Dec 2, 2013

My students were happy and pleased to get a computer that is wireless to work with because it allows them access anywhere on our campus.

The students are using it to research college information. jobs, fill out college applications, financial aid workshop and ASVAB testing.

We greatly appreciate anything that helps the student learn, provides them with college and career information or helps me boost their learning.

Thank you for your support and understanding of the needs of my students.

Again thank you. May you be blessed in returned kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Enger
