  • Give us a Voice!

    Funded May 18, 2012

Thank you for donating funds to Give Us Voice. We are very grateful that you were willing to give us the opportunity to expand our music and drama programs. Funding for these types of opportunities are rare and this opens many windows for our students. The purchase of these microphone stands, clips, and microphone makes it easier for us to make community presentations such as concerts and assemblies.

We already had the chance to use some of the equipment for our Holiday Concert. We used two of the stands and the microphone for soloists and for our emcees. This enabled the audience to hear the soloists and to hear the program that we were presenting in English and Spanish. I received many complements on the changes from parents and community members who were grateful they could hear the emcees without having to strain.

I'm incredibly humbled as a teacher that you would give me access to these amazing opportuities. We have a play and a musical planned for the near future. In the spring students will participate in another school-wide concert and the talent show. Thank you so much for giving to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. S.

  • Bigger Books Even Bigger Excitement

    Funded May 31, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donations to our classroom. The students are truly in love with these big books. The look in their eyes when one of their favorites "Caps for Sale" becomes larger than life is incredible.

Your donations have given the students the ability to experience literature hands on. Students are able to highlight words and practice using their finger or pointer to follow text. These books have also improved our ability to work cooperatively with our peers. The students are excited to sit in front of the book with a partner to find key words and show off their reading skills.

Thank you again so very much for your donation. Not only has this increased the engagement in my classroom, but it has sparked a love for books that you can not replace”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. White

  • Make the Real World Come to Life with Nonfiction Books

    Funded Jun 12, 2012

Thank you so much for your donations to allow my class to be excited about learning to read and learning about the world around them. My students love to sit in the bean bags and look at all the nonfiction books. Some students are even excited about being able to read the books. The books have also been a wonderful teaching tool. We have learned about the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction literature. I enjoy the expressions on their faces when they see the pictures in the books we read aloud and when they are able to tell me something new they learned. The look on their faces is just magical.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mosby

  • Math Mania!

    Funded Jun 1, 2012

This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my "Math Mania" project. The folder games and math quiz game show have been a big hit among my students! These interactive games have created a challenging, but fun attitude towards learning basic math concepts. The folder games provide cooperative learning, needed practice, and a way for groups to self-check their work. One of my students even said. "These games are better than butterfingers!"

I want to thank you again for your thoughtfulness and concern for the education of our future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Witt

  • What is Beauty?

    Funded May 31, 2012

    "These books are brand new!"

That was the first response to our new set of Uglies books that you were so generous to provide for us!

The goal of our unit was a bit of social analysis- finding out what happens when our quest for physical perfection goes wrong. We were not disappointed as we read, analyzing our own faces the way that the book judges "uglies" and determining that there was, indeed, a limit to how far we would go to conform to what everyone else thought of us.

That was our goal, but our unit became so much more than that...

Our Science teacher jumped on board and taught about magnets, working with the students to determine if the "hovery-stuff" in Uglies could really work.

Our Math teacher helped us develop a "pretty formula" that would make any Pretty Committee proud.

Our Social Studies teacher created Tally's world on the floor with tape in her room; comparing the cities in Uglies with the city-states of Athens and Sparta.

Of course, the best moments for me were times when they didn't want to stop reading. I had students in my afternoon classes stopping by in the morning to read the daily agenda in hopes that we were reading that day. I had kids who were previously completely intimidated by a 400-page book beg to take it home at night.

Thank you for your generosity. We could never have had such an amazing first-novel experience. I can't wait to recreate it in 2013-14!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. W.

  • Reading For Pleasure in 2nd Grade

    Funded May 31, 2012

Thank you so much for the wonderful reading supplies you donated to our classroom. The leveled books have been and will continue to be great resources for my students. The organizational bins have helped the students become responsible for keeping the books organized and leveled. It is amazing to watch the students become responsible for their reading levels and supplies.

The students have their reading level written down in their reading folder, reminding them what level books they are able to choose from. Each day I give the students time to pick a book out of the leveled bins to do an activity with. I've found that giving the students a choice of what book they would like to read has given them a sense of ownership and pushes them more than if I assigned them a book. It is also reassuring to know that the students are working independently reading books that are on their level.

These activities would not have been possible without your generous donations. Allowing the students to take ownership in their reading has made them more successful readers. I can't thank you enough for helping my students become successful independent readers! I hope you enjoy some of the pictures of the students engaged in their books in our reading corner. Thank you again and I hope you take pride in knowing you have made a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Druffel

  • Is Columbus in Ohio?

    Funded May 31, 2012

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We have been receiving Time for Kids Magazine in our classroom for several weeks now. The initial benefits include my students learning about current events and what is going on in the world. I was not prepared for the added benefits though! The worksheets that arrive each week with the magazines are tied directly to the standards I am teaching and give the kids a fun way to extend the concepts we are covering in class.

My students look forward to their Time for Kids Magazine each week. We have read articles together, they read independently and they even do group presentations about what they are learning. It has been amazing! One of the favorite activities was a featured play about bullying. A small group of students acted out the play and we discussed bullying and how to prevent it.

I really cannot thank you enough for what you have provided my students with. They often have a hard time relating to things that do not occur right in our own city and Time for Kids Magazine is allowing them to travel all over the world and learn new things!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews

  • Reading Beyond the Classroom Walls!

    Funded Jun 1, 2012

It is a wonderful feeling having my project funded. More importantly, my second graders felt the generosity of complete strangers who believed in my project enough to help fund it.

Your kindness and generosity has truly made an impact in my classroom. My students are actively engaged in daily reading activities using the leveled readers in guided reading groups, independent reading or peer reading. They love choosing from the "Donors Bin of books." The reading wands are a hit! It's amazing how fun comprehension practice is with reading wands.

It's early in the year, but I can already see how fun reading has become for my students and we have your generous donations to thank for that. My students experience "doing without" on a daily basis. I'm happy to say, right now they are excited to be reading "with more".”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Emmons

  • Listen Up!

    Funded Jun 1, 2012

I want to thank you for your generous donation of headphones to my class. We were in great need and your kind support will allow my class to use the computers in the way they were intended to be used. Students can now work on individualized learning programs without disturbing the students around them. Our classroom can now run a little more smoothly by allowing different learning modes to be accessed simultaneously. I am now able to work with individual and groups of students knowing the rest of the class is actively engaged in their own work. I have seen tremendous growth so far largely in part due to your gift. Thank you very much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cain and Mrs. Reese

  • Words, Words, Words: We Need Words!

    Funded Jun 1, 2012

    Dear Donors,

Thank you kindly for your donations of the dictionaries to this classroom. It's much nicer to know that I can finally completely dictionary assignments and have students take charge of learning new vocabulary words on their own.

I really feel that having a set of dictionaries is important for an English classroom. While many of our students can now go online to look up the definition of a word, many do not understand what a dictionary has to offer. When we used these books on Monday, many of my students did not know that dictionaries give many synonyms nor does it give the multiple endings of worlds. I really feel that this is unfortunate because with our language so diverse and with multiple endings, our students need to know how to obtain information.

Again, we have already used these books and they were just delivered last week. Thank you for your kind and generous donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kovar
