Want to see more science literate citizens in the next generation? It starts by getting and keeping kids excited about science. One way to get kids excited about science is to help their teachers do cool things in science class. And the easiest way to help teachers do cool things is to give to Donors Choose. So pick your project and save science ed today. Tomorrow, young citizen scientists will thank you.
  • Increasing Reading Achievement in My Science Classroom II

    Funded Oct 8, 2009

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom through DonorsChoose. The students have already started reading the books and are enjoying reading about what we have learned in class while earning AR points for school.

These books will increase my students' reading levels, comprehension skills, and retention level. They will be much better prepared for college-level reading and comprehension thanks to your support of my science classroom library.

I am also creating question sets for each book to evaluate levels of understanding before and after reading the books in order to gain a better understanding of the impact these books will have on student learning in my classroom.

Words cannot express my gratitude for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Helgeson

  • Making Our Mark: From Field Biology To A School Arboretum

    Funded Oct 1, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation in support of our class botanical garden. With spring finally here, we are all very excited to be working on this project. Last semester, my biology class laid the ground work for this project, using field walks and the books you donated to select a number of plants for the botanical garden, and to describe how they are related and adapted to the desert ecosystem. This semester, our class is picking up where they left off, not only with more plant identification and research, but with designing and planning the layout and water catchment system for the garden. Within the next few weeks, we will be transplanting the plants, setting up the landscaping, and writing up the guides for each plant, including Scientific and Native names. The students are all tremendously excited to be able to apply their knowledge, and to make a lasting impact on their school. We have even decided to do a "Tree of Life" mural on the wall in the garden, which will portray the relationships amongst the plants in the garden, and other local species. I can't wait to post the pictures of the finished garden. Thanks to your support, my students will be able to proudly display their new knowledge for the community and future students to see. Your donation has made a lasting impression on them, and on our entire school.”

  • Graphic Science!

    Funded Dec 30, 2009

Thank you for your support of our classroom. With the addition of the graphic novels requested in this project, we now have a great library of nonfiction titles. Our ninth grade Living Environment and twelfth grade Physics classes have instituted a weekly session of silent reading time. My students love it and some have even requested to take home some of the graphic novels that you generously provided. The forensics-themed titles are the biggest hits so far!

It is my goal with this project to foster the love of reading in my students and it has been a great success so far and I have only you to thank!”

  • Developing a Classroom of Thinkers with a Science Library!!

    Funded Oct 25, 2009

I cannot thank you all enough for providing your support to this project. I have been able to incorporate a few books into the classroom already and it has provided so much engagement. The students are very appreciative of these books and they are excited to use more of the books and materials next semester.

All of the materials will provide a better learning environment and will also allow more interactive activities for my students to discover science.

    Thank you so very much!”

  • Speaking Science!

    Funded Oct 1, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom! My classroom is a more welcoming place for everyone thanks to you. My ESOL students now greet me everyday with a smile, ready for another day of learning because they know that they have special materials just to help them learn.

The materials that you donated helps them learn so much more than they did when they had to try to complete the same assignments as the fluent English speakers. We now have a learning station especially for them, where they can use the flashcards and picture books to learn the benchmark and vocabulary words of the day. My students now feel like they are an active part of the class and they don't feel left out or overlooked.

Even in just one month of having these materials, I have noticed SO MUCH improvement in my student's academic growth. When before, I could barely communicate with them about anything, they now are almost able to communicate if full sentences with me about the layers of the atmosphere and the water cycle (we're learning Earth Science right now). I even had one ESOL student volunteer to participate in a science skit on stage in front of hundreds of people where she used the English science words she learned through the flashcards and books. The learning and confidence my ESOL students have gained as a result of your gift has been priceless.

I look forward to watching them grow even more throughout the year and am excited to watch their love of science bloom as we get to use the biology materials you gave us later on in the year.

    THANK YOU!!!! ”

  • Evolve an Urban Teen

    Funded Oct 1, 2009

    Hello all my wonderful donators!!!

You donated A LOT of materials--and we have not used all of them yet.  But, I'd like to thank you for what we've already used!

    1) We received an amazing illustrated book of early humans.  The photos of the actual skeletons, along with the reconstructed drawings of the hominids really help the students to "visualize" where it is we came from.  This used along with the great hominid coloring book engaged the kids (we are an Arts & Media school...so any this type of activity meshes well with the students).

    2) So far we have watched only one of the videos--introducing us to some of nature's endangered animals.  We are looking at how the animals are adapted to their environment--and then how they become endangered when their environments change quickly.

    3) In the attached photos--you'll see some crazy looking skeletons!  The students went on a "fossil dig" and had to reconstruct their animal, only using the bones they discovered.  It was a great activity and showed students how scientists have to "fill in" the gaps...  A great lesson to connect to evolution and how we collect information about the past.

Again, please understand that receiving these donations to our classroom keep my students engaged, and then in turn keeps me engaged in this profession.  The students need both of us if they are going to succeed!  Please continue to support public education--and know that you have made a difference.

  • Biodiesel - Sustainability for Our Future!

    Funded Jul 28, 2009

I am the teacher of a great bunch of science students at a small, rural high school.

I want to try to put into words just how grateful I am to you for your generosity in

funding the biodiesel kits for my classroom.

I am enclosing the notes from some of my students who have had the opportunity

use these materials. The students absolutely loved the experience. Several wanted to know if they could put the biodiesel they made in their cars. Students jumped right in and began the process.

They were fascinated by the difference in the way the vegetable oil and the biodiesel burned in the lamps. I am so happy that they had this experience.

Because our school is in a poor, rural area purchase of enrichment materials such

as the these for a classroom are not feasible without organizations like yours. You

really made a difference to these kids. They are reading information and doing their own

research on biomass energy. I can't tell you how nice it has been to see these kids get interested and excited about such an important topic. Your generous donation has enabled these students to

have this opportunity to experience scientific inquiry through hands-on activities

Thank you again for your generous gift. Donor's Choose and the generosity of

wonderful people like yourself has been a real godsend to classroom teachers.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. G”

    Funded Oct 9, 2009

I am so thankful for all that you have given to my project! It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. Your gift will affect many children for years to come!

The tools that you have funded will enable my class to get a variety of different reading materials! They will be able to read about many different subjects and topics that they otherwise wouldn't know about!

I can't express how grateful I truly am! I can't wait to see the children in action and tell their parents and other staff members about the great things they are achieving!”

    Funded Nov 20, 2007

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your donations! My students are going to be thrilled to use all of these hands on manipulatives to discover that they in fact are stupendous scientists! This is my first time ever receiving free materials for my class, so I thank you for helping me in creating an environment where learning is successful and of course always fun. Looking forward to all my new goodies!

    With Much Appreciation,

Thank you so much for funding my project. I am so excited to be able to have these materials available for my students to use this year. We love learning about science and will really enjoy having other sources of information from which to learn about the topics we study. This will be an invaluable resource for us. I can't tell you how grateful I am for your generosity.

    Thank you so much,
