You probably know Baltimore from The Wire. I didn't live there, but the town where I grew up (Columbia) is too rich to need DonorsChoose. • Active Readers are Active Learners!

    Funded Jan 25, 2011

I cannot overstate the impact having access to paper made in my classroom. My fellow teachers would look at me in awe when I was at the copier, and they saw that I was copying a primary source document, in 12 point font, double spaced - and I had one for every child. My students are budding historians, future doctors and lawyers, and 99.2% plan on attending college. They are also, on average, three years behind in reading and writing. They deserve to read actively, to have a chance to interact with the text, to pose questions on the page, and to develop the reading and study habits that will help them to succeed in college. Your donation has made it possible.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart. ”

We are truly grateful for your generous donations to our classroom. The book binding machine, and colorful printing paper allowed the students' work to come to life. They were excited to publish their work. They knew that they could put it together to create a book. The personal laminating machine also allowed students to protect their work so that it would last longer. Finally, the recycling game taught students the importance of recycling. Likewise, it taught them items and materials that are recyclable.

With many budget cuts, teachers often have to spend their hard earned money to purchase materials and supplies for their classroom. However, with the help of donors like you, we don't have to worry about having enough supplies. We can actually concentrate on teaching and making learning a great experience for children. Again, we are thankful for you donations!”

    Ms. Plain

  • Listen and Learn: Improving Struggling Readers' Skills

    Funded Dec 5, 2010

I want to thank all of you again for your donations to my project. The listening center supplies have had an immediate impact on my classroom. We use the listening center several times a week during our Silent Reading time and some students have even requested to use it during indoor recess!

The listening center supplies you have provided allow my students to engage in reading books that they might otherwise struggle with or be unable to focus on for a full period of reading. Students who sometimes pose management challenges are eager to get their turn at the listening center. Finally, students have been able to form mini book clubs in which they discuss the books they are listening to, and this is the greatest skill they will need to take with them into Middle School.

With the current budget freezes and cutbacks, your donations have allowed me to provide something new and exciting to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Fischer

  • Readers Need a Variety of Independent Reading Books

    Funded Dec 14, 2010

I just wanted to send one last note in appreciation of your donation to our school reading project. The books that we were able to purchase have all been integrated into the classroom independent reading libraries. Our students and teachers know that the best way to improve reading achievement is to spend as much time reading independently and to read books that are on their reading level. Your donation has helped make this possible.

Our school has a vision of helping all students read on or above their grade level. Independent reading time is one of the most effective ways of helping us reach this goal. Finding partners to help purchase a wide variety of reading materials helps everyone involved.

Please know that our teachers and students appreciate your support and thank you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Whisner

  • Make History Alive Through Great Books!

    Funded Nov 22, 2010

We have just completed the third novel "Squanto" and I am astounded by the way my students have become so much more curious about the Native Americans and the impact they had on the colonists. In fact, the book has led us to a full fledged research into the Wampanoag tribes and their history. I can't thank you enough for your generous donations and hope that my descriptions are enough for you to fully realize the impact that the books your donations purchased had on my class.

Each book enabled students to develop and deeper and fuller understanding about the history of John Henry and the development of inventions during that time. The illustrations were beautiful and captivated their imagination. They certainly understand a tall tale now and had great fun creating their own.

In addition, "Just Juice" was a compassionate story of a girl and the struggles she and her family dealt with. The story reverberated in my students' daily lives as I watched them become more helpful to a couple of the struggling readers in the class. They also expressed how much more they appreciated their own families and were able to recognize the beauty and strength they gain from helping each other.

Again, thank you so much and know that your donation has an incredible impact on the education and personal lives of my students that will carry on with them for many more years to come. Most important, they have developed a keen interest in reading even more books!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Doeirng-Rebello

  • First Graders on Fire For Reading!

    Funded Dec 21, 2010

Thank you all once again for donating to our First Graders on Fire for Reading project! My students and I were so excited when it arrived in our classroom! They wanted to read the books immediately and were excited that they recognized some of the titles.

My students have had the opportunity to read several times using their new books within the listening center. They are very engaged while reading along with the story and I have even heard some of them laugh out loud while reading! I have already noticed a difference in their confidence level while reading along with the stories and excited to share their books with others.

This resource is a great addition to our classroom and will be used often. I am eager to see the impact this resource will have on their reading experience and motivation to read. I am deeply touched by your generosity and dedication to education!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Beyea

  • Reading on Various Levels

    Funded Dec 17, 2010

Thank you so much for your wonderful generosity towards our classroom. My students can't get enough of these books. Even my struggling readers now can read with success because they have books that match their reading level and interest. I have two students who are currently reading below grade level and because of this, have been extremely discourage to read any book. Now, they are able to read books that match their current reading level and they want to read even more challenging books. On the other end, I have 5 students who are reading chapter books and novels and are able to find books above their grade level.

From the bottom of my heart, I truly thank you for your support in my goal to have each and every child reading on or above grade level by June. This library is a great tool in achieving that goal and without your support; none of this would have been possible. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

  • Cooking With Kids!

    Funded Nov 10, 2010

Words cannot express how truly thankful I am for your support of my students. It is great to see that there are people out there who believe in the education of today's youth. My students have greatly benefited from the use of cooking in the classroom. Through our cooking we have learned about measurement, time, proportion and how to follow directions. The students are able to apply the skills we have learned in class to a real life situation which takes their learning to the next level.

Thank you all again for your support!”

    With gratitude,

This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The sight word and phonics centers that you donated have helped my students grow their knowledge every day. They are so engaged hen using the activities and they have the opportunity to collaboratively learn as they complete their work. The phonics centers are helping them learn to decode words and the sight words are helping with their fluency, all of which are making each one of my student's a better reader. I know that these resources are making a huge difference and will continue to for future Kindergartners.

Our school district is facing a huge budget cut so without your kind gift; my students would not have these resources. I am proud to share that a have some students who have mastered all 220 sight words and some students are reading at 1st and 2nd grade levels. I truly believe that these independent learning centers have pushed them even further and this would not have been possible without each one of you.

  • SHARPENING PENCIL AS I SHARPEN MY MIND

    Funded Dec 3, 2010

I can't think of any words to describe my happiness and excitement for your support and donation to my project. Indeed the spirit of gift-giving/Christmas is always around. With these donations, my students will be extremely glad and inspire to do better because materials will no longer be a problem.

The materials that you have funded will enable my students to practice and hopefully master the skills necessary to be successful. This will also provide an opportunity for everybody to have school materials and be excited about learning!

Thank you very much and I can't wait to share these materials to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Molato
