Jack & Jill Politics has chosen projects that showcase the election (past and present), promote awareness, civic engagement and current events.

Thank you so much for your generosity in funding this project! The timing for your donation is just perfect - we are in the midst of working on our senior portfolios and about to start writing resumes. My students are aware of the state of our economy and the fierce amount of competition for jobs. Many that were able to get part-time holiday jobs last year were beat out by adults for the same job this year. They are motivated to learn how to become professionals, and are driven to become the best candidate for the job so they can get started on a solid career path after graduation. Now they will have the resources to do just that. You have made such a big difference in their lives and their ability to become productive citizens. Thank you again for your kind generosity. You are appreciated”

This classroom project was brought to life by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and 5 other donors.
I'm so amazed that your generosity will allow my students to stay involved as our country inaugurates a new president. Our class ran a school wide election the week before the national election, and they were positively electrified with excitement. The materials you have funded will allow us to continue learning about current events and our nation's politics on a level that would otherwise not be accessible to us. I can't wait for them to tell you themselves how much they have learned. Thank you so much for your gift”

Thank you for funding a class subscription to Time for Kids. The United States and world will be coming to my classroom because of you. This is such a good time for the students to learn about their new president and the history that he will be making. Through this magazine they can read about the excitement we will all share in 2009. The students will be gaining a wealth of knowledge through this donation and become educated future voters”
When I found out you had funded my request for Weekly Readers, this news brightened my day, and I'm sure it will have the same effect on my students! Thank you so much-- I am so excited to receive these magazines and begin incorporating weekly current events lessons into my curriculum. My students are enthralled by current events; as we discussed this weekend's wildfires in class today my students eagerly participated and were disappointed when the period ended because they wanted to continue the discussion. I am certain that Weekly Readers will help engage my students in reading, and will help them learn so much more about our world! Thank you again-- I can't wait to begin!
Thank you for your generous gift! Since the election is over, these magazines will help to keep my students engaged in current events. Through kid-friendly journalism, my students will learn about text organization, participate in relevant dialog, and increase their limited vocabularies. At a program improvement school, students do not receive nearly as much instruction in social studies and science as do their higher-income counterparts. This is just one of the many steps I am taking in the classroom to put 30 third grade students back on an equal playing field. With your help, they will become informed, active citizens. Thanks again”
Thank you so much for funding "Keeping Up With Current Events." My students will use the magazines to learn about the world around them and improve their reading skills. I am positive that they will love perusing through the magazines. They will find articles that will spark meaningful conversations in the classroom as well as with their parents. This a turning point in U.S. history with the election of Barack Obama and your donation will help student realize that.
Thanks Again,
Julissa ”

The magazines are on k-5 grade reading levels, giving all of my students opportunities to make informed opinions on the happenings in the world. Our Social Studies lessons will have a whole new dimension and I'm excited to hear the classroom discussions.
You have set in motion the value of staying in the loop of news, on a regular basis, for a group of children who don't always find reading easy or enjoyable.
Thank you so much for funding my project! I am excited to have the opportunity to bring the world into our classroom through the use of Weekly Reader magazines. My students will enjoy the articles. They are always so interesting. I enjoy how I can incorporate so many skills into each Weekly Reader session--decoding new words, building vocabulary, comprehending content area selections, and more. We will also use the magazines to improve map reading skills and current events knowledge.
Thank you again. I look forward to sharing with you in the Spring how our use of these magazines is enriching our classroom”
Thank you so much for this generous support for our school. I had assumed by now that the project wasn't going to get funded and we wouldn't able to use the memoir during the election. However, now that Obama is our actual President Elect and will be President when our students read his memoir, it will be all the more compelling, and, I expect, serve our school well as a resource for years to come. We expect to use this in the 12th grade English classes in preparation for their writing their own memoirs and we will do so with a particular emphasis on the concept of a "journey" and on using experiences to define and move us towards a higher good.
Thank you so much for your generosity! I am so excited about getting the Malcolm X graphic novel into my students' hands! I believe that your gift will truly be inspiring to them, and hopefully promote a love of reading in general, and of nonfiction graphic novels and biographies in particular. It is so wonderful for my students to know how many people like you, who are not necessarily a part of our school community, care about them and their education. Your generosity is a model for them as they become adults, and hopefully they'll give donations to kids at other schools just like theirs. Thank you again, and we look forward to receiving the materials”
