Evolution and Ecology are fundamental to a lifelong appreciation of the world around us. Help me fund learning projects in high poverty schools in areas where teaching evolution may be challenging!
Thank you all so much for your donations and support in funding my project. It is so rewarding to know that teachers still have support from outside sources. I know I am a better teacher for doing projects with my children that without your help, I would not have been able to do.
My students have benefited so much from this project. The students really loved uncovering DNA, to find out "who done it". They also enjoyed the process of identifying different inherited genes and traits. We were also able to unravel several evolutionary theories with the help of these labs. The labs you helped fund were not only fun, but they also helped my students sharpen and fine tune their critical thinking skills and were great guided inquiry.
Again, I cannot express how thankful I am for your help. Please know that you donations were greatly appreciated by myself, my students, and our school. ”
These adjustable pipettes are great! In previous years I've always ran out of samples because one team would take too much of the DNA sample in their eyedropper and not leave enough for the others. With these pipettes everyone got enough for their experiment and we got visible results for our gel electrophoresis! The next thing we're going to do with the pipettes is use them for serial dilutions on a culture of bacteria that will demonstrate natural selection. Now that my students have the skill to use the pipettes they can focus on the theory and concepts of evolution.
When I taught them how to use the pipettes I let them know that it was Chevron that made this experiment possible. ”
We read this book thoroughly, breaking down each section. Altogether students learned nine stages of the evolution of our species. Students learned how single cell organisms could have bunched together to form multi-celled creatures. Likewise they were able to grasp, through the colorful illustrations and delightful rhymes, how something as seemingly improbable as a single cell could, through small changes, eventually become us. As part of an extension to the book we looked at how closely related all humans are, how relatively recently our species evolved. To many students it was a shock because they were use to looking at the differences between nationalities and ethnicity rather than the stark similarity between all humans.
Your gift was also an amazing resource in another subject besides science. As English language learners, my students gained valuable vocabulary and grammar from the book. The structure of the book allowed them to easily access and recall new words.
I look forward to rereading this book with students next year. These books are a treasure and I plan to take care of them so that they'll be used for many years. Thank you for your gift.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Vizthum
