Anthropology in Practice Supports Social Sciences

Part of: Scientific American
  • $180raised

  • 5schools served

  • Bare Materials

    Funded Oct 6, 2011

Wow! The entire grade cannot even begin to thank you and give our appreciation to each and every one of you for so selflessly giving to our school. It ceases to amaze me how so many people are willing to help provide students on NYC with the tools they need to succeed. We have been using our Bare books to create a community book that showcases the uniqueness of each child. We have created pages about our families, our roles and responsibilities, needs and wants and comparing ourselves to families long ago. These books will be a year long journey and we all can't wait to see the final products!Thank you for all your kindness and support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ahmad

  • Frederick Douglass for Immigrant AP Students

    Funded Oct 26, 2011

Thank you so much for the donations to my immigrant advance placement students. They have successfully completed their projects, and to say the least I have been thrilled with the results.

Years ago, most of my students could barely speak English, and now they have created brilliant projects that highlighted the works of Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garrison, and of course Frederick Douglass.

Thanks to your books, my students have a new found appreciation for American literature and have gained a greater understanding of the dehumanizing nature of the American slave system. May God Bless each and every one of you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Cortes

  • Animal Farm

    Funded Dec 28, 2011

Thank you all so very much! This mini-grant is going to have a major impact on my presentation of Global history and on the students pedagogical development. I have had to split the reading of this book for the last several years.  This has meant that my students in different classes were not able to share the experience at the same time and that disconnect tempered how they were taught.  Some students were not able to read the book at all.

Because of your generosity, the class that was not able to read the book in the fall has begun reading it ahead of our study of the Russian Revolution.  The students were very excited as they began to read the book and I look forward to our discussions.  All discussions are much richer after the students have explored the notions of corrupting power found in "Animal Farm."

Thank you so very much for your generosity and kindness.  ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Christine Fryer

  • I Need Guns, Germs, and Steel

    Funded Oct 27, 2011

Words cannot truly express the gratitude that I feel towards your generosity. Your contributions towards my classroom have made a real difference in the learning experience of my students. We use "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond in our Global History class to gain a deeper understanding of they different factors that led history down the path it has followed. Using this book to supplement the standard curriculum has enabled my students to delve deeper into their studies and to gain a fuller appreciation for history.

On behalf of my students and my school, thank you for your support and I hope that you will continue to support the education of children across our country.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Foley

  • Catching Up on Current Events

    Funded Oct 6, 2011

I want to thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom.  Receiving Scholastic News magazines has already benefited my class in many ways.  My students are learning more about issues currently affecting our country and other places in the world.  They've been fascinated by many of the articles and are gaining an appreciation for cultures and opinions that are different from the own.  They truly get excited each time I hand them a new issue.

Students today need as much exposure to non-fiction as possible.  Without your donation, I would not have been able to purchase Scholastic News for my class.  Your donation will contribute to increased academic success for my students.

Donations like yours help to ensure high academic achievement for thousands of students in the United States”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. G.
