Sciencewomen Reader Challenge 2008

Part of: Science Blogs
  • $3,229raised
  • 18projects funded
We're hoping that, in this time of global economic crisis, climate change, and political turmoil, our readers (generous souls all) can dig deep to help some kids learn skills they're going to need to deal with the mess we leave them. Thanks for whatever you can give, all donations will be gratefully appreciated. And for those who can't donate, thanks for your good wishes and maybe spreading the word to others.

-- Science Woman and Alice Pawley
  • Heating And Cooling Differences Of Land and Water

    Funded Oct 2, 2008

Thank you very much for your donation towards sand and thermometers. I am looking forward to teaching the unit on weather during late November and early December. These materials will provide an opportunity for my students to observe the heating and cooling differences of land and water. Your generous donation will benefit many students who are visual and hands-on learners. Thank you again”

    With gratitude,

  • Preventing a "Silent Spring" in Southeast Missouri

    Funded Jan 15, 2009

My students and I send our sincerest thanks to all of you for the generosity you have shown in helping fund a classroom set of Rachel Carson's seminal work "Silent Spring." The 35 copies of Silent Spring I have received will be used primarily with my Ecology classes, as a supplement to my standard classroom instruction. My students have already benefited this year, and will continue to do so as I use them with future classes.

I hope to use these books to not only incorporate scientific literature in to my classroom, but also to give my students insight into their environments. I am confident that I will succeed given the response from my initial usages of the books. Although we have not had the opportunity to read the book in its entirety, I have incorporated excerpts into both my biology and ecology classes. I have received positive feedback from my students. I feel they are connecting with the material in a very personal way. Based on our discussions, most of my students seem to be developing an increased awareness of the fragility of the world around them and their place in maintaining it.

Again my sincerest thanks to all of you. Please feel confident that your generous gift has touched the lives of my students, and will continue to do so in the future. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. D.

  • We're In The Dark

    Funded Dec 4, 2008

Thank you for funding our project! Our students are very curious about the world, and many are concerned about the impact the use of fossil fuels is having on our environment. These materials will go a long way toward helping them understand alternative energy. I think these materials will be so fun to use that they won't know they are learning!

Thank you again for helping to make the concept of alternative energy a hands on learning experience for students who cannot see. In this time of budget cuts and uncertainty, it is a real blessing”

  • Energy, Will We Run Out? What is our Alternative?

    Funded Nov 2, 2008

My students and I cannot thank you enough for your generosity. You are making a large contribution to these children's future. I wish you could see the joy in the students' eyes when I told them that we had been funded. They were so excited because no one has ever given them anything as special as this before. • Out of This World!

    Funded Oct 21, 2008

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our project. My students will love it. I have one student in particular that is absolutely positive she will be an astronaut when she grows up. She has ignited an excitement in the classroom about the planets and this will escalate it to a whole new level! Once again, thank you!!! It is because of people like you that we are able to bring such excitement into the classroom.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. ”

  • Rock the Classroom

    Funded Oct 15, 2008

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to you. Your support will help us make science more interesting and engaging for our high school and middle school students. This is our first year teaching Geology at our small, rural school. These funds will allow us to get maps and specimens in order to conduct more interesting and realistic laboratory exercises. I know our students are inspired to learn when they have cool stuff to do in class besides the same old routines. Thank you again for making science fun”

  • Measurement - Why Is It So Difficult?

    Funded Oct 8, 2008

Thank you so much for your kind and generous donation for my students. I have an eager group who lacks only the supplies needed to learn measurement concepts. They ask questions and work hard to achieve even in a difficult environment. I have told them that donors such as you have been very kind to fund materials and they are grateful.

    Again, thank you.

    Mari”
