  • Who's Your Favorite Author?

    Funded Dec 12, 2009

Thank you so much for the extremely generous donation you made to my class this year. The books you purchased by several celebrated children's authors have made quite an impact on my students reading abilities and reading enjoyment. I have bins full of the books you purchased and everyday my students ask if they can choose one of these special books to read during our independent reading time. They love all of the authors for different reasons and having the books available to them has opened their minds and hearts to literature. A telling moment came the other day when a special education student who could not read a word upon entering my class chose "The Very Hungry Catepillar" by Eric Carle to read in its entirety to me. Their excitement and love for these books has improved their academic proficiency this year and given them a solid foundation in literature. Thank you for supporting my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Grothmann

  • Understanding Simple Machines Isn't Simple

    Funded Dec 13, 2009

I really appreciate your help and support in funding my project "Understanding Simple Machines Isn't Simple". The children have been so excited to explore the many different simple machines. They seem fascinated to learn how each one works! One of the kits we received allows the children to make simple machines independently.

The favorite machines so far have been the pendulum and the inclined plane. We did an experiment with both machines using homemade objects and materials. For example, the boys and girls timed how fast matchbook cars traveled when released from different heights on an inclined plane. We also measured the distance the pendulum swung using different lengths of cord. Several children have told me they are doing similar experiments at home.

Thank you so much for helping us get real examples of these simple machines. Your help has made it possible to begin creating a lifelong love of science in many of the children.”

  • Projecting Compounds For The College-Bound

    Funded Dec 15, 2009

This letter can only partially express how thankful I am to you for your support in purchasing an LCD projector for my classroom. The projector has revolutionized my teaching practices and I'm happy to report that my students are benefiting from increased efficiency, more clearly expressed explanations, beautifully colored figures of chemical phenomena, college-like note-taking, and, most importantly, a consistently executed classroom routine.

As at many low-income schools around the country, our school's financial situation is tight. The current budget does not have room for purchases like LCD projectors for individual classrooms. However, I simply cannot express how much of an advantage I have in investing students and presenting content material thanks to the influx of technology.

Without your help, my students would not enjoy chemistry as much as they do now. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Wilcox

  • Road Weenies, Wimpy Kids, and Katie Kazoo (Among Others)

    Funded Nov 25, 2009

Thank you so very much for your generous donations to our classroom. My students and I have enjoyed receiving and reading these great new books on a daily basis!

Every day, for 10-15 minutes a day, my kids participate in self selected reading. Since we've gotten all of these awesome books, they have been so much more engaged and excited to read! They even ask if they can read all period long! Prior to getting these books, SSR time was sometimes met with sighs and groans because there simply weren't enough "good books" to go around. Thanks to your generosity and selflessness, every student in all of my classes not only has one good book to read every day, but even has a list of good books that they want to read in the future.

Thanks for caring and for making a difference.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Savage

  • Multimedia Access for a 9th Grade English Classroom!

    Funded Nov 18, 2009

The impact of your donation has been incalculable. In my classroom, the students have been more involved in the lessons, more engaged in their own learning, and (I think) simply enjoyed learning English just a bit more. Sure, maybe it's partly because my poor handwriting is no longer an issue; but more importantly, it's because the students are now the ones writing on the board, seeing images with each vocabulary word, and interacting with their learning every day.

There is also the impact on the children (more than you may think) who have trouble seeing the chalkboard. Having an LCD Projector allows me to make learning accessible to all students, regardless of whether they can afford glasses or not. And what about the students who learn best with visual cues? For them, an LCD Projector has allowed me to include an image with each vocabulary word and use engaging PowerPoint presentations to meet their needs.

In short, your money has paid off already. Thank you so much. My students and I thank you every day, and we see the product of your donations in the form of learning. This is what I hope my class is all about, and it has been realized, in part, because of you.

Thanks again, and please continue to support my fellow teachers in Baltimore!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. S.

  • Using Manipulatives To Reach All Learners

    Funded Dec 22, 2009

Thank you so much for donating money for the math manipulatives for my students to enjoy. These materials really grabbed the interest of my middle school students and they were excited each time we used the resources and started making real connections to our content. It was so nice to hear them chorus "ohhhh, that's why!" each time a new understanding was made.

The movement in mathematics is for conceptual understanding, and so often students miss out on the opportunities to really attain true understanding because schools cannot afford the necessary materials. Being able to get manipulatives into my students' hands has brought our classroom alive. Kids are making connections; they are "seeing" the concepts and actually beginning to process the information rather than just memorizing definitions and steps.

The students are still waiting to use some more of the materials as we dive heavily in Algebra to prepare them for high school assessments. They ask me daily "when are we going to use those?" and it's refreshing to see them engaged and interested in what we are learning!

Your gift is immensely appreciated, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share these materials with my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bovill

  • From Superheroes to Leaders of America

    Funded Dec 9, 2009

I can not thank you all enough. My students have really enjoyed the books and pillows. They have been able to read more quality books and increase their reading levels because of their access to more of a variety of books in our classroom library. The pillows have also helped my students enjoy reading in various places around the room.

So I just wanted to say thank you again and my students and I really appreciate the donation. They are taking full advantage of the wonderful library you all have helped me build for my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Sosa

  • Science In The City

    Funded Nov 25, 2009

I wanted to personally thank you for your generous donations this school year. The science kits that your donations have provided are doing wonders towards enriching science instruction. The children are getting many opportunities to use the kits and to answer many of the scientific questions that have been presented in their reading.

With our big testing just around the corner we are really buckling down to make sure that we show the world that we are serious about science instruction and providing this city's children with a quality public education. We are not just teaching how to be good students, but also how to be good citizens. Your donations have gone a long way to ensure that we achieve those goals.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gottlieb

  • Inner Visions

    Funded Dec 8, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donations that allowed us to have three dissecting microscopes in our classroom! We have already used them for a fun project to look at insect eyes and to compare the crystal structure of different rocks.

Later this year we will be observing embryo development of frogs and zebra fish. These microscopes will allow the students to see the many stages of development in the eggs. We will also be dissecting flowers under the scopes so students can see the developing seeds and other parts of the plant's reproductive system close up.

These microscopes will not only enhance student's understanding of Biology concepts this year, but for many years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dice

  • The Better to Hear and See You With!

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donations that allowed us to have a LCD projector in our classroom. We have already used it several times to project interesting websites, movies and for diagrams and note taking.

Recently we watched "Super Size Me" which was a fun way to introduce students to the basics of nutrition and the dangers of fast food. We will be using it in the future for projecting computer based lab simulations so students can do more advanced labs even though we do not have all of the actual equipment in our school.

Having a LCD projector in my classroom is an invaluable tool to use in capturing students interest in any topic that we cover. It is a tool I will use often for the remainder of this school year and many school years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dice
