  • Holocaust Unit

    Funded Sep 22, 2009

Thank you for you amazing support and kind words with each donation. I am so excited to finally have the resources to begin this unit of study.

When I started this project, I had not yet met my current students or realized how deeply in need both they and my school actually are. This project will help us take a step forward in the fight for tolerance and understanding. I cannot wait to start this unit and see what my students discuss and reflect upon.

Thank you again and again and again for giving me this opportunity to truly reach my students with such powerful pieces of literature. I look forward to sharing our progress with you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Myers

  • Connect the Dots: Making Technology a Reality

    Funded Oct 8, 2009

I am so excited to have the opportunity to write and share with you some of the ways your support has impacted my classroom and my students. It is incredible to see such a long list of donors for just one small classroom, and to know that your desire to impact the youth in our school's compelled you to give to my students.

Before my classroom had its own projector, I had to walk into school hoping that I would get to use one of the two my school owned. The system for checking out was poor, and at times I would find out last minute that somebody had gotten to it before me. My lessons would have to change at the last minute, invariably impacting their effectiveness. Many of my students struggle with organization, which makes it essential that I be able to show them work step-by-step, in an organized manner that reflects what they need to show in their notes. Without a projector, this would at times proves difficult, as the visual component of the lesson was not as strong. Further, it is time-consuming and boring to write straight notes; with a projector to put up visual images of main ideas, we can focus our time on analysis and discussion of new topics. Students become exposed to a different manner of disseminating material, which helps to prepare them for the various teaching styles and mediums they will encounter at the college level. My student's love the projector, because it makes the information clear and present. The grades in my Physics course increased by 35% over the course of the first semester, and I attribute this in part to the improved efficiency and technology in the room.

Having a printer in the room is also incredibly helpful. Just being able to print a students progress report on demand so that they can stay up to date on their performance is incredibly helpful. Further, since I only have one computer in my room, I can send students to do some research on a topic, print their information, and then send a new group. In the past, students had to sit at the computer reading and taking notes, only making it possible for one or two groups of students to access the web in a given time period.

Each and every addition to my classroom that helps the students see technology around them is essential. Not only does it help to reflect the realities of the society they will soon join as working adults, but it gives the students pride knowing that they too can have projectors and printers in their classrooms, instead of this just being an image they have seen on TV or in another school. It helps them to understand that they are as capable, and have the tools, to succeed academically and carry those skills to a college or university after high school. They may seem like small improvements, but nothing goes unnoticed by the students, and they are happy and proud that they learn with technology.

Thank you so much for choosing to support this project, and know that your gift is used each and every day to spread a love for learning and science.”

  • Lincoln, Armstrong to Obama: American History through Jazz

    Funded Oct 23, 2009

The performance was amazing! A HUGE thank you (and hug!) to all of you who donated to our trip. The students were really excited to go back to the Licoln Performing Arts Center ( I took them to a performance last year) but some were not sure what to expect of a jazz performance. Many of my students' parents listen to jazz, so they helped excite the other students who were a little skeptical.

The end result...smiles and comments like "why don't we have a music program at our school?" The performers were great! They even provided a booklet of historical documents for the students to read aloud while they played music in the background. At the end of the performance we were encouraged to come up and speak with the performers and a huge crowd of students rushed up to ask questions or show off their piano skills. When our bus arrived, we literally had to pull girls away to get on the bus!

Again, thank you so much for allowing me to provide my students with an opportunity to open their eyes to the arts. It is truly experiences like this that students remember for the rest of their lives. ”

  • Help Us Make the Continents Come Alive!

    Funded Oct 9, 2009

Thank you so much for helping me to better serve my children. Your help has allowed me to project images for my class to see- to show intriguing videos and make ancient civilizations come alive. Now that I have this projector as a tool to use in class, I have many more options for daily activities in class. The students now have the chance to interact with technology. Their eyes light up when they are able to connect their learning to something they are able to watch or see projected in front of them. I truly would not be as good a teacher without your help.

    Thank you again!”

  • Social Studies Jeopardy and Bingo Games

    Funded Oct 20, 2009

Thank you so much for your donation for my project. My students have already used and love the Native American Bingo and Landform and Mapping Bingo. Through these fun games, they review and reinforce concepts and skills that they have already learned about. I believe repetition is the key to memorization and learning and students get a chance at reviewing information on landforms, mapping and Native Americans.

I introduced Social Studies Game Show to a third grade class and they loved it. It was great, because I put them into teams and assign a team leader. When they played not only did they learn about Social Studies, but they also learned about teamwork. They had to work together for their answers to questions and strategizing against the other teams. In addition, they used math skills to keep track of their teams score. Lastly, it allowed me to assess my students needs to see what areas of Social studies they were weak in.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Martinez
