My Students

Skip recess for reading? You bet! Our book club meets during recess/lunch to discuss our book and to create projects related to the books. We just need books.

My students are curious and creative.

Due to state testing, many feel reading is just another thing on a check-list of things to do for their teacher. Book Club is a place where we discuss books and create projects like aliens, campaign posters, and masks. I have the ideas and a list of excited students, but we need book sets.

My Project

Book Club fosters a love of reading and creates life-long readers. Since the activities are hands-on, group activities, students are able to interact with friends and the book in engaging and meaningful ways. In addition to building social skills by working with peers and stretching their creativity by making things, I am reinforcing reading standards by asking the students to describe the character, tell how he or she changed, explain why the setting matters, etc. Since the book club is fun and relaxed, students don't realize they are building their reading skills.

The books you give will not only be used this year but also in years to come.

Each Book Club is limited 15-20 students so that we can have room to create projects. I will reuse the books this year until all the students who are interested have a chance to participate. I'll also use them next year with a new group of students. The students who participate will leave with their creativity stretched, their minds broadened, and their love of reading expanded.
