Literature discussion groups grab students' attention, making it fun to read!
My fourth grade students are developing their literacy both in English and their home language. For the majority of students in our urban, high-poverty charter school, this is Spanish. This year, we began Spanish literature discussion groups a few times a week to inspire students to develop their first language literacy skills.
But there's a problem! My students are reading too well! We don't have Spanish book sets for students who are fluent, grade level readers! Fourth grade is an age at which many students begin to reject their home language and culture, and it is important that they continue to see the value in speaking, reading and writing in Spanish.
We need Spanish book sets that will be engaging to fourth grade readers, motivating them to continue to develop their first language literacy. As they continue to read quality literature, they will improve their reading comprehension in both Spanish and English.
You will make it possible for my students to continue to develop their Spanish, motivating them to keep reading and become bilingual, biliterate adults.
