I remember being a kid and the excitement of getting to use a computer for the first time, especially since I did not have one at home. Now, children get that excitement with hand held devices, like the iPod Touch.
Our student population is challenged by generational and situational poverty.
This results in absentee and/or uninvolved parents, little ability to focus and follow through, negative social behaviors, and an acute lack of personal responsibility. Ours is a PK-5 neighborhood school with 74% of its total student population on the free and reduced meal program. Students are a mix of socio-economic backgrounds, gender, races, and academic abilities.
My Project
An iPod is one of the latest trends in technology, which many of my students will not be exposed to without the help of this project. Using the iPod Touch during our literacy stations will not only provide exposure to new technology but will give them an exciting way to practice literacy and math skills. With a variety of educational apps available ranging from letter recognition to spelling and number identification to addition or subtraction, learners from struggling to advanced will be able to practice skills independently on their skill level.
This project will provide some of my students a chance to use technology they may not get at home.
The resources will literally put learning into the hands of my students. Providing an opportunity to use new technology to engage in a fun learning experience is priceless.
