Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My ESL students already have the odds stacked against them. Many of my students are brand new to the country, they don't speak much English, and they don't get much academic support at home because their parents are working several jobs to make ends meet.
My ESL students range in age from kindergarten to fourth grade.
The majority of the students in my school can't afford to buy lunch, and many get sacks of food sent home for their families over the weekend. They don't have much, but they are the most hardworking students I've ever worked with.
My Project
I am requesting a ton of non-fiction books about animals, parts of speech, and idioms. My second grade students have to research and write an expository paper about an animal. I have an extremely limited supply of books they can choose from to research their animals, and many of the books I have are way above my students' reading level. The requested books would provide the variety to allow students the ability to research an animal they are interested in.
In addition, I am requesting folders to help my second graders write well by following the writing process. I am also requesting a few books on parts of speech and components of English that often trip up ESL students like homophones, idioms, and similes. With these books, my third and fourth grade students will develop their language skills and be more able to find success in their mainstream classes.
This project will make a difference for my students by giving some of them the resources to research fascinating animals on their own and providing others with the ability to build up their English and to avoid the various pitfalls that make learning this language so difficult.
